Moved to Tiers Tunic – POTM

Moved to Tiers Tunic

Thanks to Sharon who suggested this style of top based on one she owns and loves. This Moved to Tiers Tunic pattern has 4 layers, tiers or ‘shingles' and is so versatile. Make it in a fun and funky stripes, or on-trend with color blocking with a different fabric in each tier or just comfy and casual in a solid color.  What about an ombre version with the tiers going from light to dark?

Moved to Tiers Tunic Features:

  • Comfortable relaxed fit in a knit fabric
  • 3 different sleeve lengths
  • Versatile mix and match for the layers
  • Sizes 29 to 45 inch bust
  • Only one layer, no lining layer
  • How about extending and making a dress!

By request this time, the pattern is now all black and white to save on colored inks while printing.  I'd love to hear your feedback on whether you prefer colored lines or all black.

Pattern rating – the pattern testers were 50/50 on this one between beginner and intermediate

The pattern tester remarks and versions

Diane

Diane (Two Chicklets Sew Shop) – I love the nautical look this tunic has, especially in the stripes you chose! I knew I wanted to sew one for myself but my knits are very limited so it took quite a bit of thought before deciding what I wanted to do about fabric for it. This was a piece of cake! I thought I would have trouble understanding how to do the layers but after looking at your pictures, it was easy! I loved the little box of quick directions for more advanced sewists too! That is a nice touch!  I shortened layers 2-4 by about an inch since I am short and didn't want it to look like a dress.

Robin (at the Pattern Tester) – I like the casual style of this tunic. I love that fits looser in the hips, and provides coverage. It's so comfortable. I used a thin sweater fabric that had many stripes of various sizes. My fit was a little loose in the waist. Next time, I would choose a solid print for my body type, and maybe use a more form fitting knit.

Theresa (at the DIY Page) – Tunics are a wardrobe staple for me,so I was jazzed when I saw this pattern. I have several striped knits in my stash which I haven't been using because the stripes are horizontal and I don't need to look any wider, thank you very much- this pattern is perfect to use up some of that fabric.  Once I started sewing it went very fast. I used an over-edge foot and an overcasting stitch to join the tiers and then switched to a roller foot and triple straight stitch to do the tiers. Anything that looked wavy was easily fixed when I pressed it.

Due to bad weather etc, these reviewers haven't yet sent their photos but comments on the pattern only so far from:

Jane –  This was a really fun pattern to sew. It stitched up pretty quickly after cutting it out. It's the type of pattern you'll want to sew over and over, making adjustments to length and selection of fabrics to complement different outfits. The style is comfortable and very forgiving on the figure. So flirty and fun!

Stephanie – I liked the unique aspect of the tiers. It is a trendy style that would require a whole bunch of math and guessing without a pattern. It's a versatile pattern that can go through all seasons since it offers all 3 sleeve lengths. I can't wait to make one of these with short sleeve for summer! This pattern is tricky in which skinny stripes look freaking amazing, but wide stripes aren't necessarily so flattering.  Pick your fabric wisely!

I think it looks great. I am going to try adding some fabric to the bottom of each panel and then having a longer overlap. It might look stupid, but it is what I want to try.

I would love to try this pattern, would it be hard to upsize by a few inches for my size and I would prefer a loose fit and am just over the top of the size range. How much ease is included in this pattern. Love this pattern and can see getting tons of wear out of this, such a clever pattern.

There is not much ease on this pattern, but you can change that, the style is close to the body. Just add the amount you want to have on the sides.

Hi Deby,
I want to make the “Moved to Tiers” top. I downloaded the pattern, but when I tried to put them together, there seemed to be parts missing: part of the front neck line and part of the shoulder on the sleeve. I have all the pieces , but there are definitely pieces missing. I printed the pattern pieces twice over : same thing. What am I doing wrong or not seeing. I have not had any thing like this happen with your other patterns.
Help!

What would be your suggestion for shortening the top? I tried shortening the sections but now the pattern side seams are all skewed and it is hard to tell where the seams should actually be.

Laura

Really like these tiers Deby. Very current. Think it would also suit a slash neck top. Lovely pattern and great instructions. Laura (Sew Different)

Love this! It looks great in stripes. Have you seen skirts like this? I saw one at a store a while back. It was a long maxi skirt. You should do that for a future pattern.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!! You seem to be reading my mind w/ this!! BTW, I have a red/blue/silver striped knit but the blue & red stripes are 7/8″ w/ a sliver of silver in between each red/blue stripe. Do you think those stripes are TOO large to make this look good? I was just 2 days ago trying to figure out how to put some scraps of thinner striped fabrics together to make a tee for my Granddaughter!! How funny & THANKS to Sharon for hinting to you w/ much BIGGER THANKS to you for making us a pattern!!! Ya ROCK Girl, ya ROCK!!!

kweenbee612

I know, right? The skinniest stripe, the silver is the whole reason for the purchase!!! I do like blue & red also but the silver……………………mmmmmmmmmm.

Great Top!

One of the reasons I prefer black lines, instead of colored, is that usually the black lines are easier to see when tracing. Some colors are hard to see through the tracing cloth.

Very cute! It looks like it would be complicated to make, but I’m sure you make it easy. Love it in the stripes and the polka dots.
