Sewing machine practice sheets

Learn to sew and use your sewing machine with these Sewing Machine Practice Sheets.

I get a lot of visits from search engines from people who are looking to learn to sew, or looking for sewing tutorials and easy patterns.  If you are one of them – Welcome!  You've come to the right place. (I think…)

Sewing is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, fueled by shows like Project Runway, the UK's Great British Sewing Bee and a similar show being filmed right now in the US by Love Productions.  So if you want to learn to sew, or want to help someone learn to sew, a child, grandchild, friend, then learning to use a sewing machine is one of the very first steps.

How can you learn? Get the Sewing Machine Practice Sheets

If you've not used a sewing machine or are a bit rusty, then you'll want to practice your stitches before tackling some real projects.  Did you know that your sewing machine doesn't just sew fabric?  You can sew paper too!  In fact, it's the ideal way to start out and practice.

Learn to sew and use your sewing machine with these Sewing Machine Practice Sheets.

You'll need to take a look at your manual or the directions on the machine for how to thread, and then why not print out these Sewing Machine Practice Sheets and give it a try?  These sheets are also a fun way to teach children to learn how to use the machine, control speed, turn corners and sew shapes.  It's a great way to learn and practice without using up your fabric until you are ready.

Well, to start out with….I honestly really thought these practice sheets were for FMQ? After reading all these comments I felt really foolish for thinking what these sheets were really about. I will be using these to get used to FMQ. I am a newbie at FMQ and I think these practice sheets will really help me control how the free flow will work out once I try on fabric! Thank you for the practice sheets. Thank you Pam and Kokopelli for making me feel better…lol,

This is very good timing on this. I have been sewing for years but I have recently had a young lady ask me to teach her how to sew, so that she can sew clothes for her baby son. she bought a sewing machine, but has never used one. Great way to have her practice. Thank you.

Just in case no one pointed this out–here’s a reminder to clean out your bobbin case & the area around it on your machine when you are finished–paper sewing creates extra dust!

I can’t get these sheets and I have a feeling my note through Bluprint isn’t getting to Mayra. The “purchase” went perfectly but the download won’t work at all. And for the record, I’m really comfortable with technology. It’s not something that I’m doing wrong.

No, it is not, sadly I have lost control of the patterns and have very little access to them. I will have to delete and repost the sheets outside Blueprint.

This is exactly how I first learned to sew in junior high over 25 years ago. Now I have the privelidge of teaching my 8 year old daughter. I’m just in awe that she want to learn.

What a perfect way to teach a child to get the hang of doing more than just straight stitching! I taudght my granddaughter to sew this past summer and she loved it! I’m giving her a sewing machine for her birthday this weekend. She’ll also receive a craft basket full of everything she’ll need to sew for her 18″ dolls, includiing raiding my stash of fabric, buttons, laces, elastics and anything else related to sewing. I will be including six copies of the first page. I’ll leave one lesson each time I visit. That will be a way for her to practice between visits without wasting the fabric. Years ago, I wrote a learn to sew book for a friend’s daughter. I’ve rewritten it to include using her sewing machine rather than a generic machine, especially since the sewing book was written when electronic machines with programmed stitches were not available to someone on a tight budget. A lot of changes have happened since I first did the sewing book.

What is more rewarding to me than teaching her is that she asked me to teach her to sew! Her mother is not a crafty person and can’t do anything in the craft line. Neither does my stepson’s mother other than sew but she’s not one to take the time to teach the girls. Both my granddaughters want to learn to sew. They learned I sew through the many homemade items I’ve made for them and their dolls. I’ll be teaching the younger one eventually but she’s a “right stubborn ol’ child” as my Uncle Clyde would say. I figure another year or two in school and she’ll have learned to sit still and follow instructions. I’ll also teach them to knit and crochet. They see me doing it all the time since I take along a project to work on whenever I visit. When I visit, I always take along an easy craft for them to do. They’re highly imaginative and sometimes the supplies I take along wind up being used in a completely different project of their own design!

Thank you so very much for sharing the practice sheets! I was going to use lined paper – but the kids will love these much more! I was going to teach my 6 yr. old granddaughter to begin to sew this year – but her 10 yr. old brother said me too!!!
They were given a free machine by a friend and I have checked it out – works great! They both learned some hand stitching this summer and want to learn to sew – I am a quilter and make lots of stuff for them.

I love the concept! Page 6 doesn’t print out fully. I get the circles and then a solid teardrop and then nothing. Anyone else having this problem? Thanks.

This is great! I’m going to use this to help me remember my stitch sizes as well – I’ll write down the settings next to the stitch – whole punch it and file it away. I always do practice stitches before I start a new sewing project and didn’t know I could do them on paper. Plus my daughter has been asking me to teach her to sew – this is is nice intro to the whole stitch thing.
Thanks so much!!!

You are doing great job! Your projects, patterns are nice and easy and you are helping immidiately others to start sewing. This is even more important.

Pam @Threading My Way

Your practice sheets are a great way for a child to learn to follow a line, turn corners, etc. I agree with the comment above… they’d be great for practising FMQ.

Kokopelli Design

What a great collection of beginner sewing tuts! And the practice sheets are a great way to learn sewing. Those might also come in handy when learning free-motion quilting.
