Vintage Sewing Ideas

Do you love vintage designs as much as I do?

I've always had a fascination with vintage clothing designs.  While styles have changed a lot over the years, there are some truly classic vintage designs that continue to look good, or even better, as time goes by.

But what is “vintage” you might ask?  It seems like one of those terms that are probably not well defined and vary according to the eye of the beholder –so I thought I'd try to come up with a definition.  When I began my research, it turns out there actually is a semi-official definition of “vintage” clothing after all.  The below is from Wikipedia:

Generally speaking, clothing which was produced before the 1920s is referred to as antique clothing and clothing from the 1920s to 20 years before the present day is considered vintage.

Fortunately, that's pretty consistent with what I was thinking, so I'm happy to go with that.

We did a post last year focussing on vintage sewing patterns and where you can get them.  Please check it out below.  These were mainly original patterns from the 1960's, 1950's and before that are being sold by dealers and collectors today.

I am looking for a classic “boxy” sheath with pockets on the outside. Lilly Pulitzer is the designer. It’s hard to find the vintage dresses. Jackie Kennedy wore then as well. Could you direct me to something like that?

It is so nice that you are looking to vintage patterns. I personally have quite a few vintage sewing patterns for mens, childrens, ladies and other items. They are all in perfect condition despite being used a lot. I am old enough that ‘vintage’ now, was new to me!!!
I also have ‘vintage’ knitting & crochet patterns, some priced at a few pence (English patterns) or even coupons ( bought by relatives during war time ). I still use these patterns. Hope veryone enjoys your vintage things.

It’s interesting that some of those “old” styles are so classic they NEVER really go out of style.

Love the vinege clothing, but getting that skinny waistline is a challenge. 😉

The skinny waistline in the vintage years especially the 50’s was actually fake. Corsets and girdles were worn by women to get the desired shape. As fashion changed, so did the means to acquire such figures.

I love the vintage patterns you have. I wonder if you could help me find a pattern? It was a summer dress I made when I was in Grade *.It was called a drop-waist dress> It was like a shift dress with short sleeves, but at about the hip area it was like a full skirt. I hope you know what I am talking about.

Had one, suggest extending bodice to hipline and attaching semi full skirt there. Simple design.
