Skill level:

Beginner.  If you can sew a straight line, you can sew this top.  Experience in adding elastic and working with knits might be useful, but don’t worry I’ll show you how to do it and what stitches to use.  There is a tutorial video which will take you through everything.

I highly recommend the Sewing with Knits class if you want to learn more about how to get great results sewing with knit and stretch fabrics.  So Sew Easy readers get an exclusive 25% off discount!

Choosing your fabrics

You’ll need a fabric with a good stretch.  Having tested with different fabrics, I think a lighter weight one works best.  If you have a thicker cotton jersey, it can get pretty thick around the middle with all the ruching, and the lighter fabric drapes better too.

What sizes are available?

This top can be made in any size – I’ll show you how.

Is it easy to sew?

Honestly, things don’t get much easier than this!  Create something that looks really different and individual and its not difficult and doesn’t use a ton of fabric.  You’ll need a yard of fabric and a yard of narrow elastic, some matching thread and a few minutes of your time.

Actually I already gave that one to a friend. When I make things with patterns for the site, I usually make 2 at least, probably 3, and I can’t keep them all myself, so there are only photos of this one – sorry.

Glad you like it – I thought this pattern was a bit of a gamble. It’s not necessarily to everyone’s taste – but at least it can be made in any size and I know that’s important to some visitors. Will you upload to Craftsy or Facebook later so we can see how you get on?
