What’s that small pop-up on my screen? Introducing push messaging.

After several months of using a new technology called “push messaging” over on our sister site at Sewing4free.com, we decided a few weeks ago to enable the feature and offer it to our readers on So Sew Easy.  Many readers may have already noticed it or even signed up.  Our readers at Sewing4free.com seem to really love it and the take-up rate has been very high.  Initial numbers seem to indicate that So Sew Easy readers are going to really appreciate it as well.

So what is push messaging anyway, you might ask?  Push messaging is a new technology that lets us send a very short message to your computer when we publish something new like a new free pattern or a giveaway offer.  It's something like an SMS message with a link to the page or article.  (We only typically do this a few times a week so you won't get bombarded with messages.)  You won't need to wonder if you're missing something new.

Our experience using push messaging on Sewing4free.com has been very positive.  The sign-up rate of our readers there has been high and the click through rate of readers on push notifications that have been sent has been phenomenal.  According to the guys that make the technology for this service, on average, most sites would see about 10% click through.  We're seeing more like 30%, so our readers really, really like it apparently.

This super high rate is despite the fact that the system currently only works on desktop computers and Android phones while a huge percentage of our audience is on iPhones which are currently not supported, unfortunately.

If you're not interested in this new, free service, you can simply say “no thanks” in the initial pop-up and you won't get any messages nor will the pop-up make the offer again.  If you change your mind at some point in the future, you can go the small tab on the far right of the screen that says “Get Notifications” and sign up anytime.

Over the years, we've had a lot of readers asking us if there was a way they could be notified of any new posts, patterns, offers or deals without waiting for the weekly email each Sunday.  We think this is a great way to satisfy these readers with no effect on other users who may not be interested.

Please just keep in mind that this is like tuning into a radio broadcast.  You're telling your browser or phone to receive these messages.  We don't control who chooses to receive or not receive these messages.  In fact, we don't individually know who is getting the messages or not.  We only know the total number who receive it because we have to pay for it.

However, you remain in complete control of whether you receive these messages or not.  Unsubscribing is very easy.  Just click on the little “gear” symbol on any message and block all future messages.  It's just that simple.  If you have any confusion based on your browser, here are some further instructions on how to unsubscribe.

You can always give this a try and unsubscribe at any time if you don't find it useful.  Given the take-up rates we've seen, however, I'm confident you'll see the value.

i don’t mind it once a week but I find it annoying when something I’m interested in is on my screen and the popup is in the way. If I click on it to see it later it comes right up and distracts me so I’d rather only have it once a week.

I find the weekly email sufficient and prefer not to receive any sort of popup notices. I’ve noticed more and more sites using push notifications 🙁

Hi, understood. Many users like the updates, some don’t. That’s why you have complete control whether you receive or not. Appreciate the feedback in any case and happy sewing!

I really like this new feature because I still have the control to push or not to push. I am still “master” if you think about it. But thanks so much for the info. Glad to know that it is coming from your site and not some random network.
