Color Block Skirt – Free Skirt Pattern

Free skirt pattern. Love this color block skirt with the fade away panels on the side that make me look instantly slimmer!

The free pattern for December is nice and simple – none of us have time for complicated sewing this time of year!  So here's a simple free skirt pattern for a skirt with shaped seams front and back, flattering side panels and a nice comfy fit.

Make this skirt all in the one color for a classic knit straight skirt or use the seams to create a color block effect.  Be more traditional with the solid or dark panels on the outside, or go crazy with print!

Make a taper

The standard pattern design for this skirt just has a slight taper at the bottom, however, if you want to create a tighter fit, and a more dramatic look, it's easy to do that.  Move in the bottom corner a little, say 1/2 an inch, then draw a straight line up from your mark about 12 inches until it blends in smoothly with the side seam. Remember that a 1/2 inch taper moves the bottom in 2 inches in total, 1/2 inch from each side, front, and back.

I like this tutorial better than most others because it includes proper shaping between waist and hips, not just a tube.

So there you are – easy and quick to sew and you can create a nice skirt for work or going out with the interesting vertical seams front and back. If you would like to give this skirt pattern a try, then click in the big orange box below to go over to Payhip and download the free pattern.

There isn't a step-by-step photo guide for this one, because my camera was on the blink today so its video and a check-box set of text instructions only, but it's so easy as you can see.

If you want just a regular straight skirt – try out the 30 minute skirt pattern which is very similar, made almost the same way but just as the regular side seams.  If that one is 30 minutes, then this new skirt is only 35!  Take your pick….

Please instruct us on how to alter a pattern for someone with a short back waist length when constructing a dress. Also, how to adjust a skirt pattern. It would greatly be appreciated.

I tried to contact you previously but was unsuccessful which is why I am making this comment here. I want to make your peplum top with sleeves but am unable to find the directions for adding the sleeves. If you could send a link for that I would so much appreciate that. Thank you.

About de 2 rectangles : “the dimensions depend on your size and the instructions will tell you how wide to make them” (video 0:58) . I have not heard anything concerning the width o f these rectangles. But maybe I’ve missed something as English is not my mother tongue. If anyone can help me , I’ll be grateful. Thanks

Hi Deby, I’m getting ready to sew this skirt as my next project and I’m excited! I am not sure if I can see right on the video, but when you point out the seam finish around 4’30 it looks like you have used a straight stitch to run down those vertical seams. Is that correct? Is a straight stitch appropriate there? Thank you!

Yes that is correct! Hope goes well!

How much fabric is needed for this skirt?

As a guide, you would need fabric width in total, which is wide enough to fit around your hips with a small extra for seam allowances. The length of the fabric would need to be the length of your finished skirt, plus again a few inches for the waist and the bottom hemline.

Deby, I love your style. You look very good in your clothes. I have a few of your patterns and I am going to try them. I am going to start with the pencil skirt. I absolutely love your fabric….I love animal prints. I will try to send you a picture when I finish. Thank you again for sharing.

I made this skirt, thinking it would look great on my 27 year old daughter. I added extra seam allowance for easy alterations. I decided to try it on. Wow – it looks really good on me. Don’t think it’s leaving the house unless its on me! I’ll have to make her a different one.

That makes me very happy. There’s no reason this sort of skirt and style should be restricted to the young ones. Get out there and flaunt it Katie.

Looking good, Deby.

I made a test skirt out of old T shirts and like it but the knit fabric curls under the foot of my sewing machine/serger. Tried pins, clips and pressing to no avail. Any advice how to keep the fabric from rolling? Would like to know before I buy ponte fabric.

Deby at So Sew Easy

That will be the type of fabric you used. The jersey is light and does curl like you describe, but that’s why ponte is so fab – it simply doesn’t do that. Much easier to sew with that the regular jersey you would use for t-shirts. A completely different fabric altogether. There’s really not much you can do to stop the rolling. It’s just the nature of the fabric and you have to work with it, or pick a fabric that doesn’t do that. Did you see the article where I looked at all the different knits? You might find the swatch it useful in helping you see the characteristics of each knit, see what curls and what doesn’t and see which is best for each project. T-shirt fabric really wouldn’t work for this type of skirt.

Thank you for sharing your patterns Deby. I have been following your site for a while. Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. At the moment I am still an “armchair” sewing enthusiast :). One day I will site down and get to work on one of your patterns.
Thanks once again

Deby,how do you make patterns?

Do you mean how do I draft them from scratch, or how do I make them into digital patterns?

Now that is a very big question and answer. How do I make patterns from scratch. Well, its more than I can answer in a comment or even in a series of articles. I’ve been in training from reading books and taking classes. A pattern is basically made from a set of measurements, so I start with my measurements and make a design ‘block’ – a standard for a bodice or a skirt or a sleeve. Then from there is it evolved into the shape needed for the design to include moving or eliminating darts, adding pockets or gathers etc. Then the pattern is trued and tested before being graded up and down into other sizes. Each one takes me up to about a week of work to develop so its not a quick process. If you want to learn then I suggest starting out with the Skirt Sloper class from Suzy Furrer. It teaches you the basics of pattern drafting and then how to develop your basic pattern into various different styles. You could also look at the articles on here about how to draft your own skirt and how to draft your own leggings.

Deby, thank you for your answer,I speak English very little, can I understand these video-lessons?

I’m not sure. Most others I would say yes, but the pattern drafting is very technical and you would need to understand what is being said as well as just watching the pictures. But Craftsy has a 30 day no-worries refund policy so you could always buy a lesson to try and see how you get on. If you find it too hard to follow then you just write and ask for a refund and they give the money back right away with no questions.

Wow Deby you have such amazing patterns and I love the top your wearing. Did you make it? its really pretty and you always have such good advice on what material to buy for the pattern.

Thanks Paula. This is a top I bought. Its not that complicated but it uses shirring and my darned machine will NOT shirr. The auto tension keeps taking over and whatever settings I choose, it always still comes out flat! But I love this top too and would love to make another.

Deby I’m feeling the joy, but some of the things will not cooperate! You know how it goes when you have a time limit. I know it will turn out okay, just annoying when you have other things to do. Maybe i should take a break and sew a skirt, lol.

Oh dear, not feeling the joy of the season Gina! Its my favorite time of year so I’ve been going overboard with Christmassy stuff to sew, but running up a quick skirt for me is always still fun too.
