Denim Midi Skirt Pattern – A Skirt For Mid-Seasons: Part 1

denim midi skirt

This weekend we jump on the bandwagon of fashion trends with one of the most versatile and easy-to-wear things for all ages… the denim midi skirt pattern.

This denim midi skirt pattern will be perfect for a lady who wants to hide a bit of a tummy or anyone else looking for a very slim look.  By eliminating side pockets and the waistband we slim down the tummy area creating a control shape skirt with an opening on the side to show some leg.

The ideal length of your skirt will be determined by the shoes you are planning to wear.  As it is, the skirt will fall below the knee as per the current trend.  It preferably is worn with either heels or pointy-toed shoes if you are petite like me.  But, of course, you can also wear it with flats and sneakers.  The look for autumn would be with stockings and booties with a nice leather jacket and a crossbody bag.  An outfit to go from casual Fridays at the office to a martini or two in your favorite hangout.

This is the first part of the instructions. In total there are three different tutorials to help you make this skirt.

  • One 8″ to 10″ invisible zipper
  • Thread to match

  • One hook and eye

How To Download And Print Your Denim Midi Skirt Pattern

Disclaimer: Do not start this project before you have all three parts, sadly as of now I have only published two.  Life happened and got on the way of my plans. Hope you guys understand and can be patient. I will be finishing the skirt but not before March 2019 when I am back in Santiago.

Fabric Suggestions From Fabric.com

As much as possible I try to share and suggest the fabrics that I use on a project.  Please try to use the fabrics I suggest even if you do not get them from fabric.com

This denim midi skirt pattern requires a fabric with body and a bit of stretch.  It is possible to use leather or faux leather but you will have to lined it.

Sewing Instructions

You MUST make a muslin before you create this skirt using your fashion fabric.

This is a very easy skirt to sew.  The steps are very straightforward.  the seam allowance is included in the pattern and it is 5/8″.  We will be making darts, attaching a patch pocket and sewing an invisible zipper.  All of the techniques required are written in separate tutorials which are comprehensive and easy to follow.  Separately, these are all sewing skills a beginner must master and we're lucky enough to have them all in one project.

Step One

We are going to start by sewing the darts.

If you are a beginner and have never sewn a dart before here is a comprehensive tutorial for you.

Step Two

Sew the two back waistband pieces to the skirt back pieces. bv

Sew the two back pieces together and attach the invisible zipper.

For the ones who are just starting to sew, here is an excellent video tutorial with great tips on how to attach an invisible zipper.

Step Three

Sew the front waistband to the front side of the skirt.

Step Four

Sew the front and back together, use the serger to clean the seam allowance.

Using the pattern mark the placement of the pocket.  This is a patch pocket.  Sew the pocket on the side.

Attach the patch pocket using the following tutorial.  I forgot to mark the amount you need to fold the pocket, I am adding this on the drawing below.

This is the end of Part 1.  Join me next week when we will be finishing this skirt.  Until next time, keep your scissors sharp and happy sewing!

Oh good grief! It’s appalling how quickly some folks will condemn you for being human.
I’m very sorry for your loss, Mayra. And so sorry you’ve had to deal with such callous and self-centred behaviour from those people.

Mayra , this is so chic. Can’t wait for making it. Thank you so much

Hi Mayra,

I just printed out the pattern and getting ready to assemble it, but I’ve noticed the registration marks have changed from previous pdf patterns. They are now squares, where they were part of a circle before.

I’m not quite sure how to assemble it. Do I put one square over the other and completely “stack” the squares on the pattern pieces? Or are they part of a larger square? Not sure what to do.

A photo of the new system would be great.

Thanks!

Okay, thanks Mayra. So each square is now 1/4″ so I butt them up against each other (like the previous circle system) and make a 1″ square when their are four coming together. Thank you!

Hi Mayra, I just wanted to say that this skirt is beautiful. Something very different. I will definitely be making it soon. I also wanted to thank you because your are most generous giving your patterns out for free. It is a very rare thing these days. All your hard work and loads of your time goes into the designing and blogging. I am very impressed. A big big thank you from me x

Since the measurements given are finished measurements, what kind of ease would you recommend for this garment? I don’t quite know how to choose a size here!

How did you know I needed this pattern??? this style?? just for me??? Oh you shouldn’t have…but sure glad you did!!!! LOL This is perfect. I have a similar skirt I bought years ago, without a waistband, (with a slit in the back), but love this better. It is way more flattering. I would like to make to wear with boots.
Thank you for sharing.

What is the width of the seam allowances? I don’t see it on either the printed pattern or in the directions. Is the seam allowance included in the pattern or does it need to be added before cutting the fabric? Thanks.

Love the skirt. This is a definite make for fall. I have boots that require a midi length skirt. Have you tried a wool plaid yet? I have a remnant that screams to be used. With plaid so popular this season I may try it.

Do you have any suggestions for altering the front piece if you do not want a slit at all?

Marlette Louisin

Beautiful! I’m so glad that you recommend making a muslin first to iron out all the “problems” before cutting into your fashion fabric.

So many seamstresses don’t want to take the time to do this and wind up unhappy with their garment because it doesn’t fit well.

Thanks Mayra for all your sharing and I hope everyone is safe in Hong Kong!

Wow! Love this. This is a great pattern, so stylish. I will make one up right away from an old sheet as a muslin and then go shop for some “good” fabric. Thank you so much for this!

Lovely skirt. Do you have a photo of someone wearing it? I’m wondering how high the slit goes (it’s hard to tell when on a dressform). This would also look great made from linen or rayon.
