Have fun playing with different fabric combinations. The denim bag makes the most of various cotton scraps (including quite a few shirts) which have been pieced together.

The shimmery evening fold over clutch is made up with curtain fabric. This has been hand embroidered to embellish the existing pattern and tie the colours in.

How to sew your fold over clutch bag pattern

If making the top as applique cut out several strips of fabric measuring at least 9 inches long and between 3-2″ wide.

fabric strips

Stitch these together, then trim to create an applique strip piece of fabric measuring 7 by 9″. Iron, pressing the seams and then attach your interfacing.

Sew your applique strip to your bottom fabric, in this case denim. This creates a piece of fabric measuring 9 by 11″

If using a light weight fabric for the bottom attach iron interfacing.

Repeat for the back.

Lay your lining right side up, then lay your zipper face up along the edge (see picture).  Next place your outer fabric right side facing the lining, creating a sandwich with zipper in the middle.  Pin into place.

Machine stitch using a zipper foot.

Fold out so right sides are out, press and top stitch along the zip

Repeat for the other side of the bag.

Separate the layers so the right sides of the lining align, and the same with the outer, right sides together. Open the zipper up to approximately halfway (this is vital so you can turn the bag the right sides out).  Pin the layers into place.  Pinch the zipper teeth together towards the lining.

Stitch all round, except for 3-4″ on the lining. Trim the corners and then turn right sides out. Hand slip stitch your turning point in the lining.

I just saw this and that looks like strip piecing to me also, but great idea for getting rid of scrap pieces also.

Yes the seam allowances are already included in all of the So Sew Easy patterns, no need to add on anything extra.

lovely ..thanks for sharing ..
I don’t think I would refer to the scrappy fabrics as applique tho..
it’s just a bit of quilting .. or strip piecing..
but love the pattern 🙂
