I made my first quilt at the kitchen table, with a rotary cutter I did not really know how to hold and a stack of fat quarters I had been hoarding for two years. It was crooked. The points did not match. I still have it, and it still gets pulled over my knees in February. That is the thing about quilting: even the wobbly ones get used, and washed, and loved half to death. This collection of free quilt patterns is the one I wish somebody had handed me back then.

Below you will find sixty patterns and tutorials, every one of them genuinely free, and every one opened and checked by hand before it went on this page. There are bed quilts in real sizes, lap and throw quilts for the sofa, wall hangings and mini quilts for that bare patch above the stairs, table runners for Christmas and for ordinary Tuesdays, and a good number of single blocks you can practise on before you commit to a whole top.

I have deliberately mixed the difficulty. Some of these are squares sewn in rows, and honestly that is all a quilt needs to be. Others use half square triangles, flying geese, dresden plates and paper piecing, so there is somewhere to go once the simple ones stop holding your attention. If you are picking fabric for the first time, my notes on choosing your quilt colors will save you a lot of standing about in the shop, and this trick for joining quilt binding is the one I use on every quilt I finish. New to all of it? Start with beginner quilting.

Two corners of the quilting world already have their own pages here, so I have not repeated them below. If you have a jelly roll sitting in your stash, go straight to our free jelly roll quilt patterns roundup. And if you are sewing for a new arrival, our best free baby quilt patterns collection is the place to look.

You do not need much to begin. A rotary cutter, a self healing cutting mat, a long quilting ruler and a roll of quilt batting will carry you through very nearly everything on this list.

If a whole quilt feels like too much this week, start smaller. Our easy quilted potholders use exactly the same layer, quilt and bind sequence as a bed quilt, only at a size you can finish in an evening. Make a pair, learn how your walking foot behaves, then come back to the grid below.
