Goodbye, Plastic Baggies

If you pack lunches, you know exactly how fast a box of disposable plastic bags disappears. We were going through them by the hundreds, and every one ended up in the bin after a single sandwich. The day I sewed our first batch of reusable snack bags felt like a small victory: pretty, washable, and best of all, sewn from fabric I already had on the shelf.

These little bags are a wonderful weekend project. Most use a fold over flap with a hook and loop or snap closure, or a simple zip, and a wipe clean lining so they stay food safe. They sew up quickly in an assembly line, so you can make a stack of crackers size, sandwich size, and a few extras for crayons and chargers in a single sitting. They also make thoughtful, useful gifts.

Want to sew the whole lunch kit while you are at it? Our roundup of insulated lunch bag patterns pairs perfectly with a set of these snack bags, so the whole lunch travels in handmade style.

Choosing a Food Safe Lining

For the inside, many sewists like a wipe clean, water resistant layer such as food safe PUL fabric, which keeps crumbs and moisture in check and washes up easily. A quilting cotton outer with a PUL or ripstop lining gives you a bag that is both cheerful and practical. Always follow the pattern designer notes on washing so your bags last.
