Free Scarf Patterns: A Symphony of More Than 80 Styles

free scarf patternsAs the winter chill sets in the northern hemisphere, I thought it would be a great time of year to share some free scarf patterns that we have collected.  Indeed, the scarf is an element of fashion that needs no introduction –so obvious and so handy that it’s origins literally cannot be traced. Although many an historical reference exists…and stretching way way back, all the way to Queen Nefertiti in Ancient Egypt.

They’ve been worn by working men to wipe the sweat from brows in Ancient Rome, worn to display military rank in Ancient China, by Hollywood Divas when they’re going incognito…but more importantly, by us: the ones who simply love to wear anything we created ourselves, out of sheer love of sewing.

I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about winter is layering up on clothing and getting super snuggly with a humongous blanket scarf and beanie. Scarves aren’t all about winter though…they’re a way to keep the summer sun of your neck, an emergency air filter in times of need, a makeshift picnic blanket or…if your scarves are as big as mine, possibly an impromptu tent when the car breaks down. Much like the all purpose towel from in Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy, a scarf can go a long way.

Yet we aren’t all sci-fi nerds and most of us have homes to go back to so…if fashion is what it’s about, you’re in the right place. We’ve collected enough scarves to have you gifting every member of your extended family and matching scarves to your every outfit to boot.

There are a million and one clever little flourishes which can set a scarf apart from the crowd but what’s really great is the fact that these free scarf patterns will rarely take you longer than an hour and a half to complete. Enjoy!

I’ve made some plain scarves (in nice fabric) before but it’s interesting to see some extra options – especially the infinity scarves. I really must make one of those!
