Sew a Gift Card Holder

Hello! I'm Palak from Make It Handmade and Sewistry– a blog all about sewing on the cheap.  Although I do love giving (and getting) handmade gifts, I made the decision last year to quit stressing myself out over making handmade gifts during the holiday season. I called it my Happy Holidays Pledge.

So, when Deby asked me to participate in her seasonal sewing series, I knew just what I wanted to make– a gift card holder! This is the perfect way to add a handmade touch to an impersonal gift card. I have a special place in my heart for clever sewing construction, and I think this little gift card holder is clever! It's made out of a single rectangle of fabric to reduce the amount of sewing and turning. This makes it an especially quick sew for those last minute gifts.

Materials:

Fabric rectangle 12″ by 4.5″
Gift card or credit card
Sewing Stuff

Making up:

First take your rectangle and fold it in half, wrong sides together as shown.

Using the gift card as a guide to make a crease, fold the top portion up. Flip the whole thing over and do the same thing for the other side.

If you look at the rectangle from the side, you should see something like this. The folded inside portion will become the pocket for the gift card holder.

Sew along the outside of your folded square leaving a small opening at the top for turning.

Now all that's left to do is turn the card holder inside out. Although you can just top stitch across the top to close the hole, I like to do the entire outside flap. Because I'm fancy. 🙂 You can also hand sew the opening closed using an invisible stitch like the magic stitch.

The you're done! Simply slip your gift card inside…

And close the flap. You can tie a little bow to do discourage peekers. We know who you are!

This little project was a great way to use up scraps of this winter themed fabric I've had for far too long. You can also make a pretty patch work version with multiple fabric scraps and a little bit of extra time.

Great, quick project! I think I might use plastic snaps as the closure. That way, the person can reuse it to carry their gift cards, etc. It’s like a second, “extra” gift!!!

I don’t usually comment on these things but I want everyone to know how great this tutorial is. I’ve literally never sewed in my life and I was able to replicate this and it turned out so neat! The instructions are easy to follow and the design isn’t overly complicated. Thank you!

I liked the instructions! The pic from the ‘side view’ made it easy to figure out and I made a bunch of different sizes. Thank you so much.

Confusing as hell. You need to explain the folds better (and yes, I’ve made many things that are inside-out and with hidden/French seams)…the pics are not showing clearly what you are doing and the wording is ambiguous.
