Just for You – Selfish Sewing book review and project

Pattern from the Just for You Selfish sewing book. This is the Painters Clutch Bag.

Do you know the Sew Can She site? The lovely Caroline is one of my sewing bloggy buddies so when she wrote a book about sewing, and collected together some great tutorials and patterns from other awesome sewing bloggers – I knew you might be interested in it.  She asked me if I would like to try out one of the patterns, and of course I said yes.  A chance to sew a nice easy project without having to design my own pattern first – you bet!

JUST FOR YOU – SELFISH SEWING WITH YOUR FAVORITE SEWCANSHE BLOGGERS

We all need a little sewing time for us.  I'm lucky, I just sew for me, but I know many of you sew for others and only occasionally or even rarely for you.  So this book was written with YOU in mind – a little selfish sewing time with projects you can make and enjoy yourself.

I've completed one of the September sewing projects – the Painters Clutch Bag. It's oh-so-simple to sew and the perfect pattern to show case a special fabric print or a large scale print that you can center on the plain bag panels.

I'm a big Sci-Fi fan and love anything Dr Who, Star Wars etc so when I saw this bag, I knew it was just what I needed to use that very splendid Dr Who fabric I had in my stash.  The simple shape shows off the Tardis, the Weeping Angels, the Cybermen and Daleks to perfection.  OK, so this isn't my everyday bag, and my husband just doesn't get it at all – but I am going to take this all over town!  I bet I'm not alone in wanting a geeky sci-fi bag from time to time.

This bag has simple wooden handles (paint sticks are recommended but I can't get those here so substituted wooden dowels.  It has a center fabric divider, french seams and a bias bound bottom seam.  All very neat, quick to sew and easy enough to add all and any variations you want to make this style your own.  I added a bright and funky lining – just because I can and it makes me smile!

This bag is amazing! I had no idea you where a whovian Deb! I bought the TARDIS and Dalek all over red fabric (red is my fave color and Doctor Who my fave SciFi show) with all intentions of making something for me.. and yet it is sitting in my fabric bin just waiting to be sewn! I do believe this might be the perfect project for it! I might even make one for my sister too 😉 she is a brand new whovian

We are a family of Whovians. I have to get me some of the fabrics. I love them, especially the Van Gogh exploding tardis print.

Love the Dr. Who bag and the lining is just wonderful. I’ve seen the Dr. Who material at my local JoAnn’s. I’m currently making a Dr. Who quilt for my grandson. I was going to do the paper piecing ones but ended up making it appliqued from pictures of some of the paper pieced blocks and googled Dr. Who and got a lot more ideas as well. The paper pieced ones didn’t have the full design printed on paper to add the material to so looked too complicated.
