When my son was a baby, he loved to watch “Walking with Dinosaurs,” that great BBC documentary series. When I say “loved” I mean he watched it every day at the same time, 11:30 am, for half an hour –he was 11 months old. This routine lasted for a year. After the episode, he would take lunch, a bath, and an afternoon nap. After he woke up from his nap he would grab a pair of yellow oven mitts and he would pretend for the rest of the day to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex, for him it was a “Dieddo”.
I bought the oven mitts in Ikea. They were yellow and lasted 15 years. At the end, they were not the best-looking mittens, but I just couldn't give them up. They gave me so many fond memories of my small kid in yellow shorts and yellow oven mitts running up and down the park “scaring” everyone.
Well, some time has passed and those original oven mitts have since disappeared as has my now-grown-up baby boy. Well, he's not disappeared, but just moved away to start his own life. In any case, making this oven mitt pattern reminds me of him and in the hopes that you find it useful, I wanted to share the design with you too.
This is an easy and fun project that should be suitable for all levels of sewists and will take only a couple of hours to complete.

Pattern Layout
Finished measurements:
The oven mitt pattern comes in one size only, but you can just add/take away the seam allowance if you want to change the size. They are long so fit them to your taste accordingly.
How to prepare the fabrics
All seam allowances are 3/8″ (1cm). The pattern has three pieces and we will use them to cut all four layers of material.
For your reference, I am using the green fabric for the outside of the oven mitts and the red fabric for the lining.
The pieces below are the outer layer or the oven mitts.
Glue the insulated lining to the outer fabric using a temporary fabric glue. Why temporary? Because it doesn't leave residue on the needle when you sew.
Sew the thin batting to the lining fabric using a straight stitch in criss-cross pattern.
How to sew the oven mitts
Place the thumb/bottom part print side out. Place the thumb piece print side down. Sew at 3/8.
Trim the seam allowance by half.
Turn the thumb piece upward.
Place the top piece on top of the thumb and sew.
Turn the outer layer inside out.
Repeat the steps with the cotton lining. But don't turn inside out.
Slip the lining inside the outer layer.
Make a loop with bias tape or a cord to be able to hang the oven mitts.
Fold 1/2 of one end of the bias tape and pin it to the raw edge of the oven mitts.
Sew the bias tape around the opening of the oven mitts being sure to catch the hanging loop.
You now have a pair of pinch grip oven mitts or potholders. I should say that I now have a pair that will replace the make-believe dinosaur.
These oven mitts can be easily made in a couple of hours, perfect for the season of giving and baking.
Fast forward 17 years and I am still able to recite 4 to 5 lines of the beginning of each episode of Walking with Dinosaurs. Comes to think of it, I still have the DVD's bought at a BBC store so long ago. The trouble is I no longer own a DVD player and none of the computers seem to have DVD slots anymore. Everything is somewhere in the cloud now.
Do you have an item that holds a special place in your heart and you would like to replicate? Tell me in your comments down below.
Cheers and happy sewing!
I have 3 year old dinosaur addict grandson. I love this. I plan to make for him and add button eyes a red felt tongue and white felt fang teeth. He will love it.
I am sure he will!
I have the same problem, cannot download the pattern “site do not exist” 🙁
Hi Petra we had a problem with the server but it is was only for a few hours.
Thank you SO much, Mayra, for this pattern and tutorial. I’ve been wanting to make puppet-style oven mitts for so long and your pattern is the cutest one I’ve found. My printer broke recently and I haven’t replaced it yet (thank you, Covid) but your photos on the cutting mat allowed me to draw the pattern on graph paper and I’m pretty sure it’s accurate. So thank you for your kindness and Happy New Year to you and your loved ones. 🙂
Hi Dori, only someone with attention to detail can pull this off, congratulations if you have Instagram do share a picture and tag me so I can follow you and see your work. Kind Regards and Happy New Year!
Wonderful pattern, thanks! These will make great Christmas presents for my family. I’m definitely sewing eye balls on them. They’re kids will love then too!
Fantastic! yes they do make great Christmas present I will also be making some for my mother.
Thanks for this lovely and useful pattern! Once we are over the New Year celebrations this will become one of my first 2020 projects.
I like how these are made less bulky with the thumb grip. I have made the heart shaped potholders, which are nice but the extra length up the arm is always a plus.
Might be great but I must be doing something wrong after I downloaded the converter I dont know how to see the pattern. Maybe you can advise me what to do next? Thanks
You don’t need any other program than the Adobe Reader a free program from adobe. Here is a tutorial on how to print a PDF pattern.

Really like the pattern and look forward to making these.
Thank you so much!
I love it, especially that the sleeves are long. Seems I’m always burning but arms just above my wrists with my usual mitts. Thanks so much for this pattern!
Oh these are lovely!!! I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your patterns and daily inspirations! Picking my fabric now for these!
Great pot holder. And My grands used to want to watch that every time they came over! Good memories. And like you, with my kids, i have a tub of movies they loved and no device to watch them on! I think i will make both adult kids potholders and share your story! Thank you…
Does this pattern make two oven mitts? According to the pattern pieces, I have cut out extra fabric for two mitts but not enough batting and insulation for two. Can you please clarify this?
Hi Rosemary, The lining layer has the thin batting and the outer layer has the insulated lining. You can make one or two mitts.
Thank you for this lovely pattern – I like it as it isn’t as bulky for grabbing things as regular oven mitts. However, I cannot reconcile 2 pieces of insulated lining and 2 pieces of thin batting for each piece – unless you mean that each piece should have both the insulated lining and the batting attached. But I’m quite sure that isn’t what the instructions say ….. ? I also find them a bit long if you are wearing them over long sleeves (which is generally what I am wearing in the winter here) — but that is very easily remedied – and can see where it is a benefit if you are bare arms.
Thank you for this great pattern. I’m showing my age but I recall my husband using a similar mitt to do a Kookla and Ollie puppet “show” for our boys when they were toddler.
So adorable and uncharacteristic for a reserved, professional man and his boys.
Thanks for the memories. I’ll enjoy making these mitts.
You are most welcome!
Thanks great idea and looks like it will be easy to sew as gifts.
I have used many of your patterns, but I simply cannot download this one.
I’ve gone back several times, clicking everywhere with no luck.
HI Pat, just tested the pattern and it works. It must be at your end, do you have a pop-up window blocker?
