My Perfect Jeans Blouse – Make It In Two Hours

This is my perfect jeans blouse, made in silk crape, elastic sleeves, slit collar, and hi-low hem. It is an elegant yet casual blouse that can be worn under a jacket. It can be the perfect blouse for work or dinner; worn on its own, or it could be the perfect casual chic top to get you through the day.

I took this blouse on my last trip to Paris; I used it with white jeans and sneakers; what made it perfect is that I did not need a jacket at night, and when it was warm enough at midday, all I had to do was to undo the ties at the neckline and roll the sleeves.

Spring is here in the Southern hemisphere, so this is the perfect blouse that can take you from morning to cool night temperatures. And so far this year's autumn is turning out to be pretty warm, so perhaps you can use this blouse to catch that last bit of the year's heat.

Materials

  • 1 1/2 to 2 yards of silk crape woven fabric
  • thread to match
  • 1 yard of 3/8″ elastic
  • 2 yards of 1/2″ bias tape or make your own

Sewing Skill: Confident Beginner

This perfect jeans blouse is ideal for a beginner who has never made a blouse. You will practice the applications of bias tape and elastic, sewing a hem, and, more importantly, you will practice choosing the right size for your figure.

Take note that there is no seam allowance included with the pattern. I recommend a 5/8″ if using the french seam technique to finish the blouse or a 3/8″ if using a serger.

How To Make Your Perfect Jeans Blouse

Please remember there is no seam allowance in the pattern.

You will need to make or purchase bias tape. Below is the tutorial.

French seam tutorial.

Step One: Sewing The Back

The back of this blouse consists of a top and bottom part. You can either gather or make a box pleat to the bottom of the back to match the top part. I have chosen a box pleat, but in hindsight, I wish I had made gathers to be more consistent with the front.

Pin and sew at your chosen seam allowance. In my case is 3/8″ since I am using a serger to finish the seam.

Perfect Jeans Blouse

Step Two: Join The Back With The Front

Gather the front to match the width of the back at the shoulders. Pin and sew.

Perfect Jeans Blouse

Sew the sides, and use your serger or a small zigzag to clean and secure the seams.

Step Three: Sewing The Sleeves

The sleeves have a small gather at the top and elastics at the wrists. Sew the arm seam first.

  1. Gather the sleeves at the shoulder seams to match the armhole.

  1. Serge or zigzag the hem, and sew the sleeve's hem at 3/8″, leaving a small gap to insert the elastic. Add enough elastic to be comfortable around your elbows should you decide to wear the sleeves rolled up.

Step Four: Finishing The Collar

I have used 82″ in a total of handmade continuous bias tape; you can use a similar number by following the tutorial I have shared above.

Lay the blouse front side up and draw a line as long as you want the slit to be; mine is 5″ long I do not want to show any more than that, but you can use any number you would like.

I add two small snips at the bottom of the slit to make the fabric lay straight, and this small tip allows me to attach the basic tape easier.

Perfect Jeans Blouse

Apply the bias tape to the slit. Working on the print side or right side of the blouse, place the bias tape right sides (print sides) facing each other.

Perfect Jeans Blouse

Sew the bias tape, turn and sew again using the stitch in the ditch or sewing very close to the edge. Either way is acceptable as long as you do it straight.

Perfect Jeans Blouse

Make a tiny diagonal stitching at the bottom of the slit to make a V. However, this is optional.

Fold the rest of the bias tape in half, match the half with the middle of the back, pin and sew the bias tape to the blouse.

Fold and pin the bias tape all along the collar. Do not pull or stretch the bias tape as you sew.

Step Five: Hemming your blouse

There are at least four ways to hem a blouse made with delicate fabrics; the easiest is to serge, turn the hem, and stitch. Below are a few more ways to do the job of making a very professional-looking hem.

And that's all. I hope you will appreciate this design for being so simple and easy because it is projects like this that can really help you show your creativity. Since the techniques are time-tested and simple, you can start modifying and tailoring the design to your own personal tastes.

I do love this perfect jeans blouse, do not get me wrong, but I think for the next blouse I will add a bit more gathers at the back, front, and sleeves, making it a bit wider since the fabric skims the body. As it is not very loose-fitting, nor is it tight. Hence it is perfect for an hourglass figure; if you are an inverted triangle, you need to add space for your hips. If you have a large chest but small shoulders, you will need to add more gathers at the back and front to accommodate your larger chest.

Let me know in the comments below how you find this pattern. Would you make the blouse in another fabric? or would you like me to grade the blouse to accommodate larger sizes?

Until Next Time, and while we keep the world together one stitch at a time, Happy Sewing!

I was bummed when making this pattern as the front pattern piece does not say to cut on fold. I ended up with a seam down the front as I did not have enough material to cut another front piece out.

I would appreciate if you could do the patterns in plus sizes as high as 5X. Hopefully this is doable and not asking too much. Thank you.

Hi, the front pattern piece does not say cut on fold, it says cut 2 but the photos seem to show the front as one piece. Which is correct? Thanks

I just caught this comment about the piece being cut on the fold, which I did not do and had to make a little seam. Also, can you tell me where video is for instructions?

It’s beautiful. I’m a beginner sewer without things like a mannequin/bust…can I still make something like this? I have quilted for years, so I can sew a straight stitch in my sleep 🙂 but have yet to venture into garment-making.

Very cute blouse. I would love to find instructions or patterns featuring capelet blouses. I love the look but have not been able to locate a pattern or instructions on how to add one to an existing blouse. Can you help?

I would really like it if you could grade your pattern up by a couple of sizes. Some of us sewists, myself included are larger sized, and I am not successful pattern grading myself. It would be awesome if you could do this for us ! Thanks!!

I will be trying this pattern within the next week. Seems to be simple enough to follow.

I have not sewn clothing in a while but have never seen the hemline on a sleeve shaped as yours is. What is the reasoning for this? The blouse is beautiful, so I may try it.

I’d like to try this. It looks like a great blouse.

My only question is regarding the bias tape on the neckline. How is the second piece of bias tape finished? Are the ends folded under? Do they lay over or under the ends of the bias tape used for the slit at the front?

Thank you for the pattern!
