St Patrick's Day is nearly here and as you may know, it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories for the holiday.  This tradition is known as the “wearing of the green” and dates back hundreds of years.  We've decided to put together a collection of free St Patrick's Day Sewing Projects to help you find your green this year!

My husband's family was originally from Ireland, so St. Patrick's Day is always a fun holiday for us.  A few years ago, we were lucky enough to go and visit their ancestral home in Westport, County Mayo, on the beautiful west coast of Ireland.  We had a wonderful time there and Ireland should definitely be on your list of places to visit, especially if you can trace any ancestors there.

To finish the story, just outside Westport is a famous mountain called Croagh Patrick named for St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and from the summit of which legend has it that St Patrick cast all the snakes out of Ireland.  (And by the way, still to this day, there are no snakes in Ireland.)  We were fortunate to be visiting at the time of the annual pilgrimage when as many as 30,000 people, young and old, climb to the top.  What a fantastic memory!

I love the shamrock quilts with fresh colors of Spring, using Shamrock appliques or St. Patrick’s “cheater” cloth full of Shamrocks, leprechauns, pots o’ gold and ends of rainbows. Did you realize that “heart shapes” we used in February for St. Valentine’s Day can be turned around – 180 degrees – in March to become Shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day? I learned that tidbit from a quilt calendar I re-order every year.
