Straight leg knit pants pattern with video tutorial

knit pants pattern

I'm delighted to announce the release of my latest sewing pattern – the Classic Straight Leg Knit Pants pattern.

An easy to sew and versatile pattern.  Great for beginners.  Sew a comfy and relaxed pair of pants  – dress them up or down depending on your fabric choices.  Fitted and shaped around the body, hips, and thighs with a straight leg falling from the hips, but taper them in from the knee if you prefer.  Great for work or make them in some funky fabric for relaxing.  Lightly gathered to a comfortable elastic waist for those days you need a little extra give.  Plenty of length in the leg and height in the rise for taller women, but easily adapted to shorter lengths too – the video will show you how to get a great fit.

Great pattern for some simple easy to wear pants to match everything in your wardrobe. Make them in black, brown, navy, grey – and never be without the right pants whatever the occasion. (Modeled here with the Gathered Front Top – free pattern.)

Available in 5 sizes from a 34 to a 44 inch hip.  Full video tutorial included as well as the step by step instructions.

The video shows you:

  • how to sew them
  • what stitches to use for knit fabrics
  • how to adjust the rise depth to make it just right for you
  • adding an elastic in a casing
  • how to create a neat flat front for a smoother look.

For stretch knit fabrics only.

It's tried and tested!  Knit Pants Pattern Reviews

My lovely pattern testing group helped me ‘iron out a few wrinkles' and made the instructions easy to understand – thank you ladies.

Irene from Serger Pepper got a new camera with remote for Christmas and really went to town ‘super-modelling' her new pants with the gathered front top too.

And I can't resist sharing these photos Emma snatched over the Christmas break, complete with her new cat socks!  Don't you just love those.

Mariana from Handmade by Maryall prefered a tapered leg and found it easy to create the sort of silhouette she was looking for.  She commented that she liked the combination of the written and the video tutorial both being available.

These pants got great feedback:

“The numbered pages made it easy to put the pattern together.”

“They look and are very comfortable. They are definitely something that I would wear out with a hip length blouse or shirt.”

“I love the straight leg because here it's winter and it's nice to be able to put the pants over my winter boot and it looks more dressy this way.”

“The PDF was very easy to print and tape together. Much easier than many I have printed. The directions for the pants for very easy.”

“Thanks to the video, I learned a new way of figuring out where to put the elastic so it follows my natural waist. I tried it and I loved the way it came out. It's the first time my elastic fits so well around my waist. The elastic seem to contour my waist instead of sitting on it and it stays in place.”

“I have sewn similar pants before from commercial pattern and I believe yours fits much better around the curves. Those pants are so comfortable. I forget that I have them on! Well kind of ! Even after sitting and moving I find that I don't have to repositioned my pants. They are so great for walking. I will make them again for sure!”

I bought the Straight leg knit pants, Cowl neck top, and Tier top patterns but can not find the yardage needed for any of them.
Do you have that information?
Thank you

How do I determine how much fabric to buy and how to lay it out? Also, do I need A4 paper or can I use letter 8.5 x 11? Thank you!

You can use either one, you will have to piece it together and trim some of it!

Do I have to have a serger to sew them?

No, not really. Use a stretch stitch and a zigzag to finish the seam if the fabric ravels. Some knits do not so there is no need.

HI, Barbara, have you used a PDF pattern before? The pages at the beginning give you the instructions on how to put the pattern together.

Is there a place where you show a printout of how the pattern pieces go?

HI Karen, this is an old pattern and it is indeed lacking a layout printout so your confusion is understandable. The layout consists of 5 rows. First row (1 to 5), second row (6 to 10), third row (11 to 15), fourth row (16 to20), fifth row (21 to 25). Hope that helps, it really is a nice pair of pants.

It’s Sue again. I laid the pattern out on the floor and finally figured out how to put it together.

Now, I can’t wait to start sewing!

Hi Deby, I loved the video on making these pants and purchased the pattern. I can’t figure out how to put all the pages together. Is there any information somewhere where I can learn how to put the pattern together?
Thanks,
Sue

I was wondering if the sizes are marked on the pattern, so it could be graded up a size or 2. I’m 50″ hips…boy do I need this pattern. Just over chemo and I have gained so much weight from not being active, especially in the mid section and hips. I love your patterns and tutorials. I’m a subscriber on you tube. Tks

Hi Annette, yes they are marked and it is easily graded up.

I am another larger size woman — 46 in. waist, 51 in. hips. I would be happy to be a tester as I need pants. I am only 5 ft. 1 in. tall — nothing rtw fits! If I buy pants, it is mostly for the fabric as I have to buy them larger and alter them to fit. They never fit quite right …… So I need a good straight leg pant pattern — with side pockets! I can’t imagine a pair of pants without pockets, where would I put my phone and keys and the kleenex for the kiddo’s noses and so on 🙂

Does this pattern come with a pocket option? I love the straight legged, high-rise idea, but I couldn’t tell by the pattern description if it came with pockets?
If not, can you suggest a similar pattern that does? Many thanks!

HI Christine, no pocket I am afraid, you might want to try the wide leg pattern and this one comes with a slanted pocket.

Looks great. I am looking for a pattern to replicate a pair I have that has front pockets (not in the side seam) and a 2-1/2 ” or 3″ wide waistband encased in the knit fabric. The pants don’t look like elastic waist. Any ideas?

I purchased this pants pattern about a week ago and since then I have made 2 pairs! I really like how they fit! FYI..I am a size 16/16W, so slightly bigger than the 44″ hip. These fit snug through the hip/thigh area, but are still very comfortable! The 2 pairs I made were made from 2 different types of knit…one doesn’t has as much stretch as the other and fits more snug. I did add about an inch to the top at the waist so the waist elastic would sit a little higher. Overall, I am very happy to find a comfortable knit pants pattern! Thank you! 🙂

I would love to find a pattern for a swing-type top with short or 3/4 sleeves. If you make one like that, I would be very interested!

This looks like a great pattern! I come from a family of long-waisted women (although I am not one myself), and they always have difficulty finding pants that fit them properly. This one looks simple enough for me to tackle, and your excellent instructions will really help with that. Thank you!
