Waterfall Top – FREE Sewing Pattern

waterfall top

I'm so excited to bring you the free sewing pattern this month for the Waterfall Top.  I LOVE this top so much that I think it really shows in my face in these photos.  Wearing it just makes me smile.  I've got a bright pink one and one in mint and white stripes too – sometimes a plain t-shirt just doesn't cut it!

Make a statement in the Waterfall Top!

Features:

  • Looks sexy but not revealing
  • Instructions to fit any size
  • Optional shoulder strap to cover your bra strap or leave it off
  • Ruching down both sides, flatters the bust while disguising the tummy
  • Stretchy, so its comfortable
  • Flounce down one side, can be worn either way
  • Ideal beach cover up
  • Make it in something sparkly for the perfect party top
  • Full sewing instructions
  • Video tutorial too!

Skill level:

Beginner.  If you can sew a straight line, you can sew this top.  Experience in adding elastic and working with knits might be useful, but don't worry I'll show you how to do it and what stitches to use.  There is a tutorial video which will take you through everything.

I highly recommend reviewing the article on Sewing with Stretch Knits before you undertake this project.

Where can you get the Waterfall Top pattern ?

Download the Waterfall Top pattern

As usual, to make downloading easy and reliable, the pattern is hosted in my design account with Payhip. If you don’t already have an account, you will need to sign up to download, but don’t worry, it’s free, quick and easy. Add the pattern to your cart, and then checkout – no payment/address details etc needed.

Choosing your fabrics

You’ll need a fabric with a good stretch.  Having tested with different fabrics, I think a lighter weight one works best.  If you have a thicker cotton jersey, it can get pretty thick around the middle with all the ruching, and the lighter fabric drapes better too.

Below are a few suggestions of fabrics that would work very well with this pattern.

Fabric Recommendations from Fabric.com

What sizes are available?

This top can be made in any size – I'll show you how.

Is it easy to sew?

Honestly, things don't get much easier than this!  Create something that looks really different and individual and it's not difficult and doesn't use a ton of fabric.  You'll need a yard of fabric and a yard of narrow elastic, some matching thread and a few minutes of your time.

The link for the pattern file isn’t correct. Instead of the pattern, the pdf file which is downloaded has a general description of the top and the sewing instructions, no pattern pieces.

Hi deby, you’re pattern reached the other side of the ocean, all the way to the Netherlands! (So apologies for my English ;-)) I love it! Trying to remake it, I’m having really difficulties with the elastic. I can’t seem to get it stretched al the way. I bought extra stretchy elastics, and it snapped. 🙁 any thoughts of what I might be doing wrong?? Kind regards

Oh that is strange, mine was very stretchy and could have gone further still. It was no where near snapping. Just double check with me, what length of elastic are you using and how long as you trying to stretch it? And what is the width of your elastic?

thankt you for your prompt reply! Although we use centimeters in holland, i do have a measure tape with cm on 1 side, and inches on the other. So i’ve bin using the inch side. 36 for the fabric, and 16 for the elastic, the elastic is 6 milimeter wide (1/4 inch) whem I’m just stretching it, it stretches 3 times its own length.

I’ve finnised it! i probably didnt pull hard enough at the beginning, therefore, i didnt had enought elastics a little futher. combined with trying to much, and pull to hard to get it right, it snapt. But im done now! So thank you very much for everything!!

Ah Lydia, I was just about to reply. I’m glad you got it to work OK. It certainly seemed it should work from the measurements you gave me. If you get a minute, would you come share your finished project in the sewing chat group? We’d all love to see what you make 🙂

How difficult would it be to make this with the sleeve and flounce on both sides? I’d prefer not to have it sleeveless on one side.

Glad you like it – I thought this pattern was a bit of a gamble. It’s not necessarily to everyone’s taste – but at least it can be made in any size and I know that’s important to some visitors. Will you upload to Craftsy or Facebook later so we can see how you get on?

Actually I already gave that one to a friend. When I make things with patterns for the site, I usually make 2 at least, probably 3, and I can’t keep them all myself, so there are only photos of this one – sorry.
