I'd been held up previously by not having a zipper foot so my sewing options were limited. But I'm pleased to say my prized foot is in hand and ready to sew – and I made use of it right away with this Navy Pleated Skirt.

"So

It's made from a free tutorial here at Grosgrain Fabulous. The tutorial gives full info on sizing and drawing up your pattern and how to sew. She recommends a stiffer fabric like a linen or cotton twill to hold the pleats and stiffen the waistband, but I fancied a lighter version and this was made with yet another fabric remnant – a soft and drapey navy blue something. It makes the skirt very light and cool to wear and gives it a softer appearance than the one featured in the tutorial. I also made mine a little longer and fuller. We don't want to copy -right?

"So

If I had thought of it before, I could have interfaced the waistband, but it's still fine as it is. I love the look of the belt loops and the tie. But the skirt looks great without the tie as well, and it fits really nicely around the waist because it was easy to adjust the pleats until the fit was just right. If you are new to sewing, I certainly recommend having a go at this skirt just for this reason.

"So

This really was easy to make, and easy to sew. It was my first time with a zip, but it went together just fine with my swanky new adjustable zipper foot"". Everything you need is in the great tutorial – enjoy! (Modeled with my scoop neck t-shirt from the Sewing with Knits course.)
