--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/150;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/IMG_6322-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"easy feather trimming\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<h2>A bit of history:<\/h2>\n<p>Feathers have been used since prehistoric caveman times as decorations as\u00a0found in the\u00a0Grotto de Fumane in Italy.\u00a0 Feathers have been used for tribal identification most notably the Aztec, Mayan, and Incas.\u00a0 Feathers also indicated rank among Native American Indians. \u00a0In Europe, the use of rare bird feathers on a head-dress was reserved for the ruling class.\u00a0 In the Pacific region, the use of feathers in cloaks denoted the status of the wearer and were used as ceremonial attire.<\/p>\n<p>In my research on feathers, I also discovered that the word feather is related to the Latin word <em>penna<\/em>\u00a0what we today we know it as pen.\u00a0 Throughout history feathers have been used as writing implements too.\u00a0 Among famous writings using a feather pen:\u00a0 The Hebrew writings of the Dead Sea Scrolls and later on, the writings of\u00a0the Bishop of Isidore, in Seville, Spain around the 7th century.\u00a0 The feather pen was used in the writing of the Carta Magna in 1215 in England.\u00a0 Finally in the Americas on the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America all written with a feather.<\/p>\n<p>Feathers in hats and used as embellishments and trimmings on massed produced fashion became prominent with the styles of the flapper girls in the 20's and continues to this day.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-39162 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389-500x625.jpg\" alt=\"easy feather trimming\" width=\"500\" height=\"625\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389-500x625.jpg 500w, https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389-120x150.jpg 120w, https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/shutterstock_612429389.jpg 1200w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 500px; wide, unfolded 1&#8243; make your own <a href=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/making-continuous-bias-binding-tape\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>fabric or <a href=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/l\/e6000\" title=\"Amazon.com: E6000 237032 Craft Adhesive, 2 fl oz Clear\" class=\"pretty-link-keyword\">E6000<\/a> glue (most dry transparent)<\/li>\n<li>leather or <a href=\"https:\/\/so-sew-easy.com\/l\/jeans_needle\" title=\"Amazon.com: Jean &amp;amp;
