Have you tried the free pencil skirt pattern yet? I researched how to draft my own custom skirt pattern and wrote a tutorial – Draft your Own Pencil Skirt Sloper. My first skirt was great and I wear it to work often. But its dark and plain and I wanted something a little more Caribbean.

Bring on the latest skirt from this pattern – a beautiful soft green eyelet with shimmery embroidery and gemstones!

As soon as I saw this fabric I knew it would be perfect to make one of these easy skirts. In the previous version I had added a waistband, but this eyelet fabric had little holes so I knew it had to be lined. I added a nude colored pongee lining and made it without a waistband. Voila – an easy lined pencil skirt!

Its not only pretty, but it the fit is fantastic and it feels so nice to wear. I've always liked wearing a lined skirt, I like the way it feels expensive, and the lining also seems to prevent the skirt from creasing so much too. And I also think it will prevent some of the stretching out that I sometimes get in the back of a skirt from spending so much time sat on my behind.

I like to wear it just with a plain white t-shirt (which of course I made myself) so that the skirt really gets all the attention. I always get comments when I wear it. And although it cost me a little more to make because of the nice fabric (about $15 a yard), it looks and feels so much more expensive.

This basic skirt pattern has been so successful for me, that I plan to certainly go on and make some more. A yard of fabric is plenty and gives me fabric left over to make a matching purse too. I'm a sucker for matching purses!

Here's a quick (not very good) picture of the lining.

And this embroidered fabric is a winner for making a really beautiful skirt. I've got my eye on these fabrics next – hmm which to buy? One or all of them? Or maybe a big flowery print I've seen in my local fabric shop…..next skirt is coming soon!
