You can't turn a street corner without seeing someone in leggings at the moment, and they are everywhere because:
- leggings are comfortable
- leggings are versatile
- they can be worn dressed up or down
- they can be modest under clothing or figure hugging on their own
- leggings are perfect for lounging
- leggings are ideal for exercising
- they can be plain, fun or funky
- and lots more reasons
I had looked all around for a good way of drafting my own leggings pattern, but when I came across this tutorial video from Cal Patch I knew I had found it !
Starting with a few simple measurements taken on myself and a blank sheet of paper, in just a few minutes I had a custom made-to-measure personal leggings pattern. And there is only two pieces so they sew up in super quick time.
I found this stretchy snake print fabric at my local store in the remnants bin and it was large enough to make three pairs! Because leggings are close fitting, they don't use up anywhere near as much fabric as pants. And I need three pairs because I plan to live in these leggings – I've worn nothing else for the last three days and I've been super comfortable around the house yet felt good to pop out to the shops too and pick up my husband from his work. I'll be scouring my stash to look for other suitable fabrics later today….
My husband loves these – he says they make my bum look good ! I think that is all about the fit. No more baggy bum or knees now that I have my own custom pattern.
A bit about Creative Bug.
“Creativebug supports artists and designers who have followed their hearts to do what they love. We’re honored to showcase their skills through our growing library of video workshops. Join as a free member and get up close and personal access to our inspirational instructors. Or choose an unlimited plan to unlock our entire video library. Regardless of your membership level, you'll be in good company.“
The idea is a little like Craftsy – they offer video tutorials from great instructors on all sorts of crafts including sewing, paper crafts, knitting and crochet, jewelry making, soap making, book binding, home decor, needle felting and even printing. But instead of paying for each course as you do on Craftsy, with Creative Bug you pay just once and have access to ALL of the courses.
So for $24.99 (for one month, $16.99 for more than one month) you get access to the Drafting your Own Leggings Pattern and the follow on tutorial on How to Sew Your Leggings, and ALL of the other courses they offer too ! That's a bargain. There are new classes being uploaded every week too.
UPDATE – Creative Bug now sell this great draft your own leggings course as a stand alone if you don't want to subscribe to the other courses – at just $11.99. Even more of a bargain – think how many leggings you can make, not just for you, for the kids, friends, presents or even to sell.
I highly recommend the Leggings Workshops, and I followed a lovely one on making your own Paper Luminaria Candle Shades which I never would have looked at if I had to pay for it separately. There is so much to chose from, and if they all give me results like these custom leggings, I will be a very happy girl.

Leggings can be so expensive! Kudos to you for learning to make your own (and modeling them online)! Adorable!
This is really fascinating but I just dont’ dare sew knits. I haven’t figured out how to deal with them yet!! But I do love leggings and would love to make my own….
Thanks for the comment. I’ve just had a knits disaster with my next dress – I’ll be blogging about it in a couple of days. I’ve decided to take the Sewing with Knits course from Craftsy – you can see a link in the sidebar. The completed projects look great, ad the course feedback is awesome. I think some fabrics must be easier than others – the leggings were easy, but this next dress drove me mad. I’ve only just started with the knits course just recently, but already I highly recommend it.
Wow! Looks great! Wish I could sew!
Very creative!
Thanks for sharing on Tutorial Thursdays.
