Here’s a simple free skirt pattern for a skirt with shaped seams front and back, flattering side panels and a nice comfy fit. Make this skirt all in the one color for a classic knit straight skirt or use the seams to create a color block effect. Be more traditional with the solid or dark panels on the outside, or go crazy with print!
Everyone needs a wardrobe of good basic skirts. Ones you can wear every day or for lots of different occasions. This Wear Everywhere Skirt fits the bill perfectly. A classic straight skirt with a single inverted pleat center front, makes this skirt easy to wear, ideal for the office, working, shopping, the school run – in fact, anywhere and everywhere. Once you’ve got a great fit on this skirt, mark up your pattern because it’s a quick and easy sew you’ll want to make again and again.
This is a cute skirt that's easy to sew. It's another of my 'custom-fit' patterns, which means I'll show you how to create your own pattern for this skirt which will fit you exactly as you want it. The half-circle shape gives it nice flounce and movement while the wide wrap over prevents any unintentional flashing! You'll reach for this skirt again and again. Make it a flirty mini or a warm and cozy calf length - it's your custom pattern!
The Wrap Top is loosely based on the original Wrap Dress pattern that has been downloaded thousands of times and been the most popular pattern on the site so far. This ‘It’s a Wrap’ top has taken some of the best elements of that dress and turned it into a blouse with a few variations that I think you’ll like.
Stylish and practical, with ready made handles and plenty of pockets inside and out to keep you organised. Has an exposed zipper fastening across the top to give it a sporty look, and optional hardware give it a professional finish.
How to draft an ideal full length maxi skirt based off your own measurements. Slim and fitted enough to be flattering, but wide enough at the bottom so you can take proper strides and climb steps. This low volume maxi skirt looks great on all figure types.
A free pattern to download plus instructions on how you can make your own custom fit pattern too. A quick and easy sew can give you a wardrobe of skirt options depending on length and on fabric choices. Wear it short and sassy in a bold print for the summer, classic and elegant longer length in black for the office.
Summer is here at last. For some of us it lasts longer than others, but whether it’s a trip to the beach, a picnic, shopping with the girls or a day sailing, you’ll still need to look cute and summery. The design for this skirt was copied from a Ready To Wear skirt I already owned and loved. I think it has the perfect ratio of gathers to length and with the elastic waist, is comfy and casual. I think you’ll love it too. Pick your fabric and design carefully and it will become your go-to skirt for summer.
Need a comfy every day dress? One that looks good no matter where you go, and one that can take on the look of separates or be sewn in the same fabric throughout? Then the Two Become One Dress is for you. I became fascinated with this style of dress just recently. I love the casual look, like a t-shirt and a skirt, but without the fuss of having to make sure both matching pieces are clean and ironed at the same time (lazy I know). Now I can just grab it off the hanger, slip it over my head and rush on out – anywhere.
Want to keep everything ship-shape as you go to the beach or the pool? This handy tote bag has lots of great features and optional extras to keep your organised. It also has a handy expanding feature to keep the bag trim when you don’t carry much, and expand it out when you have enough ‘stuff’ for the kids too.
I LOVE this top and can't stop smiling when I wear it. With ruching down both sides and a full length flounce, its really fun to wear - yet SO easy to sew. Instructions to fit any size, and the shoulder strap is optional. This really is the ideal top for summer and looks great as a beach cover up or with pants for eating out on the waterfront in the evening.
It’s time for a wardrobe basic and a shirt you’ll want to sew time and time again. Out with the ball gowns, and in with the real clothes for real women! This is one where you can sew what you actually wear everyday. Featuring a choice of 3 sleeve lengths and a roll-over wide neck, this t-shirt is versatile and casual. But make it in something slinky or shimmery for a night out too.
A simple one piece only pattern that folds ingeniously while sewn to create a basic clutch purse. Pattern available in two slightly different sizes. Make the purse plain with some top stitching around the flap, add some piping, add decorations, ribbon, flowers or embroidery to the flap or body of the bag. Add internal pockets or a strap. It’s all up to you – make the bag and then Make it Yours with this free clutch bag pattern!

New Year, new you they say! I’ve just taken up Yoga and wanted to sew some simple exercise wear, and in so doing not only did I create a great fitted top for wearing to the gym, but also a great top to wear everyday. Make it a size smaller for a fitted finish for exercise wear, as the red version, or make the next size up for a looser fit for wearing to work. Looks great under a jacket.
Easy to sew sleeveless top with princess seams front and back and a gathered front bodice on one side. Front panel is reversible so you can choose to have the gathers on either side, or make one of each!

It’s that time of year when you might be taking a bottle of wine to a party or giving a nice bottle of wine or brandy to a neighbor for Christmas. But how to wrap it? This quick to sew padded or insulated wine bag pattern will protect the precious contents, and keep them cool on the way to dinner. It doesn't even have to be for Christmas – make these in your favorite fabrics for any time of year.
Party season is coming! It’s time to think about what you’ll wear for the holiday season this year. Want to wow them at the office party? Then you’ll need something ‘on-trend’ and with lace, one-shoulder and asymmetrical dresses all being in fashion, I’ve combined to create a free little black dress pattern that I think is a winner.
This tutorial will show you how to easily draft your own custom fit leggings pattern and my unique spreadsheet will make drawing your pattern easy. This is a quick and easy sew and once you have your pattern to keep, you can run up a new pair of leggings whenever you like in whatever fabric you like.
The latest free sewing pattern from So Sew Easy is this cute wrap dress pattern. The front has a cross-over bodice with pleats, there’s a straight skirt and an optional elastic waist, with a matching tie belt. Only the bodice wraps over leaving you safe from embarrassing wardrobe malfunction that can happen with wrap skirts. In sizes small to extra large, easy to sew, and really flattering and comfortable to wear. You'll love this dress!
The latest sewing pattern from So Sew Easy is a free t-shirt pattern for the Twist Front Top. It’s a sexy halter top that can also be a dress if you’d like to extend it. Designed for knit fabrics, this top crosses over at the front and the little keyhole at the front gives an interesting look while still actually being modest with full high coverage. The design is double thickness at the top front and back to give extra support if you need it, or for modesty if it turns chilly!
Easy summer dress pattern using a knit fabric and with different strap options. Multi-size pattern in small, medium and large with instruction for increasing or decreasing size. Dress has a ruched bust-line on the outside, supported on the inside with a second layer of unruched fabric. Empire waist gently skims over the hips for a flattering fit. Can be any length, above or below knee, mini or cut off at hips for a tunic.
Designed for softly draping knit fabrics, this blouse is easy to make, flattering, cool and strappy, with tummy covering draping and a rounded hemline in the front. And I’ve made it with wide enough straps that you should be able to wear a bra with only minimal straps peaking through at the back. The Summer Drape Top comes in a one-size fits most design. The pattern is free to download and can be made from less than one yard of fabric. Great for a beach cover up too, over a bikini top.

Thank you for all of the comments on my recent post - Self drafted halter neck chiffon blouse. Several visitors asked for a tutorial, and I am happy to oblige. I've made the blouse again in a different fabric - this time a lovely blue and cream chiffon with embroidery and sequins. Swanky! Along the way, I took plenty of pictures and have written notes to share. Full step by step for measuring yourself, drawing the pattern and sewing the blouse. Also available as a PDF download to save.
I’ve just seen your Cascade Cardigan pattern and was wondering if it could be made out of light weight fleece. I intend to get the pattern either way but need the advice before I buy any material. Thanking you in advance for any advice you can give. Ann
Hi Ann, I would not use fleece, you need a fabric that falls and hugs the shoulders so it does not look bulky.
I remember you from the original Craftsy. unfortunately for me the original computer I downloaded your patterns on died just after I downloaded them from there. I am so happy to have the opportunity to do so again on a brand new machine. Thanks so much for being so creative.
Hi CJ, like Craftsy so-sew-easy, also changed hands, I (Mayra Cecilia) have been here since late 2015 when I bought the site and all social media from Deby, let me know if I can assist you on anything.
I purchased the Lily Shift Dress pattern this morning and thought I downloaded the pattern but I am not able to find it. Can you send me the link to the pattern. I cannot wait to make this dress. Thank you.
Is this the link you used to pay for the pattern?
I wished you would use the metric system….
Sorry, Filippe, I studied fashion design in the USA and that is what is used there, this is why. But, you can purchase a measuring tape with both systems today. Like this one https://amzn.to/34xXXLP
Do you have a pattern for a ‘boyfriend shirt’. I have been looking for a free download but cannot find one
Coming soon.
I’m looking for a sewing pattern for a Lawn Ornament Goose. I just bought a goose at a garage sale, She had to be painted and the clothes she had on had to be thrown out. Really bad. She looks great now that she has been painted. She now needs outfits.
I would love to get the pattern for the caravan sewing machine cover and pin cushion. How can I get these?
thanks for sharing the pajama patterns, so handy to have with all these new designs and prints available
I found your video tutorials on how to do a hanging dish towel but I can’t find the pattern. Is it a free pattern or do I have to buy one?
Hi Charlotte, can you please send me a link to the video you’re referring to? Happy to try to help. Kind regards, Mayra
I really like your patterns, however today it has taken me 2 hours just to read the wonky Christmas star mug rug. The web page keeps jumping all over the place and the pop ups are too big, the computer is continually recovering the page. Too much stuff running in the background. Even this comment took 20 minutes.
Hi Alice, I am afraid it is on your computer and browser history and not our site. We do not have pop up advertising on our site, those days are gone when we had to get any kind of advertising company to be able to pay for the site. You need to clean our cookie and cache, erase your search history and/or change browsers.
I found your site a few months back. I thoroughly enjoy it. I do not like sewing for myself because everything I have ever made I threw away. Patterns were not made for my shape. I try and alter them but make a mess of them. But I believe I will try again your outfits are so cute. Thanks for all your hard work and your desire to share it with others.
You are welcome Angela, please enjoy!
Thank you for giving all of us such great ideas & telling us how to do them. God Bless! & keep up the good work. 🙂
Excellent! Found both. Thanks much. Hope I don’t get in too much trouble trying to find things… Thnks.
Oh, PS to my previous note. Just bought material for the tropical wrap pattern you shared so kind heartedly with us. I was also wondering if you have a pattern (to buy/free) for pyjamas. Thanks…
No, sorry nothing like pyjamas.
Hi Deby – I saw something about 30 summer dresses. Can’t find them. Or are they shown in “My Projects”, ? Also, do I sign in somewhere to your site. Can’t find that either? Thanks, again, for your help. Fran.
Hi Fran, the sign up for the newsletter is a bright pink box on the right hand sidebar which says Keep in Touch. For the 30 days of sundresses series, there is a round up of all of the projects at Melly Sews here – http://mellysews.com/2015/07/50-ways-sew-sundress.html. Enjoy!
thank you so much for the burpys. I made them for my friend. She will love them.
These projects are amazing! I am a beginner so the simple things really catch my eye! Thank you for sharing these with us!
This site is fabulous! I love to sew and experience a lot of troubles with the commercial patterns fitting properly. You provide great insight on how to fix things. My current project is the long version of simplicity 2219. I love what you did with the back and plan to implement that change. Thank you very much for taking the time to create this site!
That’s very kind of you Jody, and I’m glad you read about an idea for your dress. In fact I rarely sew with commercial patterns any more, I just found them too difficult to fit, always with huge amounts of ‘fitting ease’ or just not made for my body shape. I think the joy in sewing your own clothes comes from making them fit just as you like and styling them just as you like. Good luck with the dress.
I loved your work. I live in Brazil, and here haven’t moldes decent clothes, I’m gospel so, iI prefer chothes more long and closet. Sorry the wrong of English. Bye.
Some good stuff here 🙂
