Do You Need An Industrial Sewing Machine?

need industrial sewing machine

Do you need an industrial sewing machine?  Take a good look in your basement and perhaps you already know the answer.  Down there under the dusty covers and dark shadows, there are the many wounded soldiers of your exploits and garage sales.  Unless you are an antique dealer or a collector, why would you want to clutter your home with any more unused machinery?  Some women buy sewing machines like they buy jeans.  Don't believe me?

Run to your nail salon and ask around.  You will find that the average women have 6 pairs of jeans, some will have more. I am guilty of this, at one point of my life, I had 12 pairs of jeans and 6 sewing machines (1 Singer, 1 Toyota, 1 Juki, 1 Janome, and 2 sergers..).  I'm not sure if you know, but Toyota actually does make sewing machines –as well as cars, trucks and just about everything else.  Then I started to ask myself –what possessed me to accumulate so many pairs of jeans and this amount of sewing machines?

sewing machine brands

The answer was quite simple, I was not entirely satisfied with the product.  I kept looking for a pair of jeans that would look good and are comfortable, and I kept buying cheap ones in the hope that one day I will find the one.  I did find a couple, but they never lasted more than a year, and I was left once again hunting for the perfect pair.  Until one day I had to move to a tropical place.  My needs changed and with it the need for 12 pairs of jeans.  If I take 40 dollars and multiply it by 12, I have enough to buy a pair that is made with the best design and shaping capabilities.

Like the need for a better pair of jeans, our need for a reliable sewing machine arrives in the shape of the mountains of projects forgotten and put aside because we were not happy with the look of the buttonhole or the zigzag doesn't work anymore or the machine is skipping stitches when sewing bulky items, etc. etc.  Notice how after a marathon of sewing, your domestic sewing machine is never quite the same?  This is because home sewing machines are not meant to be used for an extended period of time.  Do you want a sewing machine that can do everything? Everything? Really..? What does that even mean?  Can it attach lining on its own while playing Bach in the background?  There is no such thing as a perfect sewing machine that does everything.  With time I have learned that 95 percent of the stitches I will never use and that professional-looking buttonhole is everything.

So now, do you need to buy an industrial sewing machine?

Like with many things, the answer is “It depends.”  You could certainly argue that an industrial sewing machine is what separates the amateurs from the professionals.  Here are a few other considerations:

  • Do you want to declutter your home by getting rid of mediocre machinery?
  • Do you want to supplement your income with your sewing and need a reliable machine with a professional-looking stitch?
  • Do you want to combine different types of material together for accessories?
  • Do you work with canvas, jeans, leather or sequined fabrics?
  • Do you sew every day for more than 4 hours a day?
  • Do you own an embroidery machine and are thinking of making quilts and handbags?

Then the answer is yes!

need industrial sewing machine

As with my sewing machines, I traded my jeans for a nice pair of well-fitted dark color  7 for all mankind jeans slimming illusion –I like the illusion part the best– and, Yes, I have only one pair now.  Expensive for sure, but worth every penny.

How many sewing machines then?  I think of machines as the brush of a painter.  You can use your hands or have just one, but the true and full answer is 3.  One serger, one domestic machine that makes flawless buttonholes, and my workhorse –an old Pfaff 563 that is reliable and noisy like a tractor, but it sews many layers of fabric together, thick leather and finishes the job efficiently and quickly.

How many sewing machines do you have?  Would you consider an industrial one?  Do you have the perfect sewing machine for your needs?  Leave a comment on the box below.  We'd love to hear your opinion.

Many years when I worked for the Highway and Transportation Dept. in my city I was able to sew on their industrial machine to make dog crate pads and when I changed jobs my friend would let me come to her embroidery shop and use her industrial machine to put zippers in the ski jackets I made for my son. I would love to have one today to continue making the jackets and sweatshirts with those chunky zippers and now that I have 9 grandkids and one great-gran I could do a whole lot more plus I have a ton of windows to cover in this old house and my two Vikings do not have the built in walking foot that my very old Pfaff had that finally bit the dust three years ago! Been looking at used machines but they are still out of my price range, this sure would help!

I would appreciate being able to sew multiple layers of fabric. My domestic sewing machine balks when I try to use it with many layers.

I have always wanted an industrial sewing machine!! Back in the 70’s I worked in a leather shop. Made custom purses, wallets, and jackets. It was amazing to be able to sew through layers of leather with ne sweat. Now I have a Pfaff Hobby Sewing machine and have to literally hand fed the needle through layers of denim. It won’t even begin to sew on leather. I’m 71 and would love to retire from my full-time job….. Which I would if I win the industrial sewing machine!!

I’m sewing again after many years and after retiring. I’ve built up a stash of fabric, bought a sewing machine and a serger. I thought the sewing machine I got was going to be great but after 9 months of using it I’m quite disappointed with a few aspects of it. I wish I’d taken more time to consider my purchase. It would be a dream to win this

I didn’t think I needed one until I saw this. Ha! I have a fabulous Juki 2200, but I’d love to buy a frame on which to mount it and make it my quilting machine. (Yes, I could free motion quilt with it, but everything I’ve tried looks vaguely like a child’s first attempt at cursive.) It is far too heavy to use for both a sewing machine and a quilting machine. I’d have to wait for my husband to get home to move it!

I think an industrial machine would make my quilting easier. Actually have 3 different machines right now and none do everything I need.

Oh yes, I could definitely benefit from an industrial machine. I have started to re-purpose leather jackets into bags and find that my current machine is not that good at working on the thicker/tougher material of leather.

i would love to have an industrial machine. My domestic machine works well with minimum layers. An industrial machine would be great for quilting with flannel backing. It would help in mending my husbands jeans too.

I do a lot of heavy sewing for my Church on my home machine, which often finds the thickness more than it can handle. My father had an old industrial sewing machine and I could really use one for the work I do.

My husband like to sew his custom wilderness gear on my poor little 20 year old Kenmore machine. An industrial sewing machine would benefit both of us! 🙂

I have been dressmaking for many years but have just started to make bags. My domestic machine won’t take the the layers of fabric required, so an industrial machine would be a useful addition. As a new grandmother, I guess I’ll be kept busy for many years!!

I would love to own an industrial sewing machine! I have in the past worked in a sewing factory. ( A LONG TIME AGO) They do the job and keep on going. I have a 4year old granddaughter and I love making her clothes, and my clothes too. I have 5 sewing machines at present but would love to have this industrial sewing machine.

Living in North east PA is sometimes very cold. During this cold, horse owners blanket their horses. Horses roll and catch their blankets on things that tear them. An industrial machine would make repairing these blankets a breeze!

Without a doubt, I need one. I’m starting to make bags and heavier duty items. Besides when it comes to a sewing machine there is always room for one more!

I love to make bags and this machine would be awesome to sew through all the layers. The fabric is fabulous and I can see many different projects that would be great with bamboo print fabric.

I have an old (30+ year old) Kenmore sewing machine that I’ve made lots of kids costumes on over the years. My MIL just gave me her newer Brother Project Runway machine when she moved into senior housing and I have TWO sergers that she has also given to me. Hubby is always bringing me leather items to sew (he rides motorcycles and he needs gloves repaired, pants, etc.) and my Kenmore is getting too old to carry that load. I COULD REALLY USE AN INDUSTRIAL MACHINE!!! I also want to start a bag making business, but I know my current machines can’t handle it.

It would be great to have an industrial machine. I am teaching my daughter and granddaughters to make quilts. We’re getting started making several Christmas gifts. Thanks so much for letting me enter.

As many of us in our family are a little short, I am constantly hemming items with denim being the hardest. I am researching now on how to make bags out of leather and vinyl and I know my little 15+ year old machine will not handle it. The machine can barely withstand quilting.

Before I leave this wonderful world due to my health challenges, I would like to present my daughter with an industrial sewing machine. She has transformed herself from a very serious drug addict to a beautiful, young woman. She sews everyday and has gone through 4 everyday sewing machines. She sews for the handicap animals and people. She designs her own creations. No one else deserves this magnificent industrial sewing machine. The reward would be speechless. I look forward to presenting this industrial sewing machine to her. Thank you.

I sew multi layered fabrics to make altar frontals for my church. I have a pfaff, it is a good machine and has worked hard for over 10 years. The gears are wearing out and not able to handle the thickness of that particular work, that is why I would like an industrial machine, power and speed. Something I have dreamt about….

I find that I struggle with many layers of fabric and interfacings, particularly bags, with zips and lots of pockets and pants, many is the time I have raised my hands in frustration and my eyes to heaven with a little prayer for a machine that will handle these projects…maybe this will be the heaven sent opportunity I need to overcome my frustrations…Annie

As A Dog Trainer, I like to make some of my own equipment..e.g. mats for dogs to go to “place”.And to repair canvas equipment ‘ like tunnels and repairing dog leads. I also work with leather to make bags. Whilst my Bernina is fabulous for making clothes I wouldn’t want to strain it on stiffer and thicker materials. Juki is calling me

I would really love to sew with leather, making leather clothes and bags but daren’t do that with my regular machine. I have also got a grandson now so to make him little denim clothes would just be amazing.

Would be better than what I put my old Kenmore through sewing a thick cover with a vinyl window for my husbands John Deere Gator. Many of the projects I do should be done on an industrial machine.

As the mother of 2 boys & 1 tomboy plus a husband I do a lot of denim sewing, jeans, vests, you name it. I have leather and pleather that I want to sew on, but hate to use my computerized machine–it’s not made for “tough” sewing. Husband said he has a canvas cover on his boat that needs mending–YES, I could use an industrial machine!!!

I think an industrial machine would fit my needs seamingly well. My poor little home machine just cries outloud every time I get out jeans for quilts or repairs or my vinyl mesh for bags. I make a ton of both. Some are donations and once in a while one gets sold. I do have a wonderful space for one to come live in.
