I'm so excited to be here today! It's so fun to sew for the holidays! My name is Heather and nickname Heather Feather. I blog about my creative “flights” over at Feathers Flights. I have a two year old son, a baby girl on the way, and am married to a man in law school .
I love sewing and decided to make a holiday activity for my son to give him something fun to do as I get busier with holidays. I came up with a felt gingerbread house that he can put felt candy on. It teaches him shapes, and I don't have to worry about him eating tons of candy!
I set up the house to for pictures, and my son couldn't wait to play with it! You can see his hand sneaking in!
Would you like to make your own?
Supplies:
Felt in multiple colors
Sewing Supplies
Sturdy interfacing
White ricrac
1. Cut out and assemble pieces of candy. I stuck to circles, squares, and a rectangle. I wanted simple shapes for my son, but you can make whatever shapes you want. I cut out stripes and sewed them onto each shape with a machine. Feel free to hand stitch if you love it!
2. Cut out the front and back of the house and two rectangles for the sides. My sides go up and become the roof also. Cut out pieces of interfacing in the same shapes and interface each piece.
3. Place the finished candy on the house pieces and trace the shapes.
4. Add any decorative lines you want.
5. Sew ricrac onto all the drawn lines. It is a little tricky to do corners, but the ricrac has some give to play with.
6. Assemble the house. The interfacing should make the house sturdy enough to stand on its own. Trim corners if needed.
Turn the house right side out and let your little ones enjoy it! My felt candy sticks pretty well to my house, but I might go back and add velcro just to lessen an frustration for my son. My son LOVES this house and placing the pieces on. I don't even think he realizes its supposed to be candy!
Thanks so much for having me, Deby! I had so much fun making a fun holiday activity for my son! For more children's Christmas ideas, check out Ugly Sweater One-Piece for Baby and Christmas Tree Stacker.

Felt horses, because many children likes them for pretend play.
I am also thinking ornaments, but if you are looking for a kid’s craft, how about ornaments for a small kid’s tree that they can decorate themselves. It would help save the larger tree from potential destruction.

Not toys, but I use my Sizzix die cutter to cut felt snowmen and trees for fabric postcards . I’m thinking about how I can use the felt and dies to make toys for my cat; she’d love them.
My cats like holiday fun too, so I’ve made a couple felt mice with some catnip stuffing.
almost forgot to leave my comment LOL I love giveaways .. I love the idea of a felt gingerbread house .. I think this would be an ideal craft to do with the grandkids 🙂
I saw somewhere, a matching game for small children, made from felt and /or fabric squares. You could use Christmas / Winter shapes (trees, snowmen, santa, elf, etc) and make up a set for children to play with. Might be handy to have at home if you are entertaining guests, or could make cute stocking stuffers. I like this little gingerbread house too! So adorable!
That gingerbread house is adorable
I’ve never really done much with felt, but I think a simple felt board where they can change the outfits on the elves would be cute.
Cute and much easier than the hot glue gun and graham crackers! Wish I’d had this tutorial when my chicklets were little!
Yikes Diane – that sounds dangerous!
I make a bean bag with a clear window in it and put in items they have to find. like buttons in the shape of different things
That is a really great idea! Fun toy you could take with you anywhere.
I have made some really cute ornaments out of felt when my daughter was small. That way she could put them on the tree as well as play with them and they wouldn’t get broken. 😀
I’ve always loved felt nativity scenes for kids so they can act out the Christmas story.
I don’t have young kids to sew/create for but a felt Christmas tree would be fun!
I think these could look cute on a holiday mantle display too.
I want to make some small animal toys that can double as Christmas ornaments – penguins, owls, etc. Thanks.
