Long Sweater Vest – An Easy And Elegant Project

Long Sweater Vest

This week I am sharing with you a project that is so easy to make that can be done in two hours. It will take you more time to download and tape the pattern together than to sew this long sweater vest.

I like to wear it when I am wearing a fitted and short dress, and I require a little more warmth or over some wide legs palazzo pants, a turtle neck top, leggings, straight knit pants for lounging around the house, or shorts and booties. My point is that it is a very versatile garment I have had for many years and in a few colors.

This long sweater vest has no buttons or zippers, instead has a long binding so it is easy to make.

It has an A-line shape so follow the lines of your body

Fitting And Additional Information

How To Make Your Long Sweater Vest

The seam allowance is 3/8″

Sewing The Front To The Back

Sew the front and back at the shoulder. Serge

Sewing the sides

Sew the sides. Serge

Making The Binding

Measure the vest from one side, passing the neckline continue measuring to the other side.

Cut a strip of fabric the length of your measurement by 4″. You can always make the bidding broader or slimmer, whichever is your preference.

You will have to attach two strips and join them at the center of the neckline.

Sewing The Binding And Hemming

Fold the binding in half to make a band. Pin the center where the stitching is located to the center of the back of the neck.

Fold the band in 1/2″ at the hem. Notice the difference, the band will look shorter than the front of the vest. Sew at 3/8″ then serge the seam allowance.

Serge the binding seam allowance.

Serge the bottom of the vest and turn the hem 1/2″, use a small to medium zigzag to sew the hem.

Sewing The Arm Hole Binding

Measure the armhole as you did with the front.

Cut two strips of bias 1 5/8″ wide by the amount the vest armhole measures plus seam allowance (3/8″+3/8″)=3/4″. Sew the ends of the strip to make a band

Fold the band in half and pin the seam of the band to the side seam of the vest.

Sew using a zigzag, then you can serge the edge and topstitch the seam allowance and the binding lays flat.

Sewing The Optional Belt Loops

Cut a rectangle give in your pattern. The rectangle is big enough for three loop belts.

Long Sweater Vest

Find the smallest part of your waist and sew the loops; I am short-waisted, so I always have to move the loop belt in the jacket and coats 1.5 to 2″ higher.

You can also try to make the more discreet thread loops.

As you can see, this long sweater vest is easy to make and even easier to wear; my favorite way to wear it is with a long sleeve t-shirt underneath and my straight-knit pants around the house. Would you like to see this pattern in bigger sizes? Would enjoy making a pair of straight-leg drawstring pants to go with this vest? Let me know, and I will be happy to share.

Join me next week for another free pattern, but I would like to hear from you; what would you like to see next week? In the meantime, “let's keep the world together one stitch at a time.”

Kind Regards, MC

Would like to know how wide is the binding around the neck going down the front? Little more detail needed.

Could you share your pants pattern please. I am just starting my journey into clothes making, trying to lose weight too, so need easy to make clothing that will not cost the earth but could also be adjusted as my body shape changes or just made again. I love your patterns and have made many of the bags but now determined to make clothes for me now.

I love this vest. Thanks. Loose fitting pants would be great to be comfy without looking shaggy.
