This flounce wrap skirt pattern is all you need to make a couple of stylish, easy-to-make, easy-to-wear skirts – suitable for many occasions. I think this is the perfect skirt to take you all the way from Spring to Autumn. Casual dressing with some sandals and a tank top, or elegant with a blouse and high heels, the choice is yours.
The flounce adds a little drama and femininity to the skirt. But also is the perfect way to hide a tummy, making this skirt the best style to wear should you be the proud owner of a belly; either because you just became pregnant, already given birth, or like me just don't have a flat stomach.
The hem will hit mid-calf for petite women and slightly below the knee for tall ones.
The grommets on the waistband make it an unconventional way of tying the skirt, but I like to come up with different ways of doing things.

- Three to 3 1/2 yards of twill cotton, linen, raw silk, taffeta, jeans fabric, suitable for single knits with 10 to 20% stretch
- Bias tape, enough to go around the hem this is optional
- Thread to match
- Three grommets

Skill Level: Intermediate
This is for someone who has previously done a skirt before, has knowledge of waistband, hem and is able to attach grommets.
Size 10 sn tested as seen on the mannequin. Any other size, make a muslin before using fashion fabric.
You should be able to understand grainline, bias cut, and basic fitting techniques, as well as the know-how to sew a tie waistband.

How To Print Your Flounced Wrap Skirt Pattern
Use Adobe Reader to download the pattern. You will not be required to have another application to download and print. Print using Landscape and Actual Size do not scale the pattern at all.
Sizes
This wrap skirt pattern is designed from Size 8 to 18 and can accommodate hips from 36″ to 47″ inches and waist from 26″ to 42″.
Adjusting Your Wrap Skirt Pattern To Your Body
One thing to note is that this skirt is a little difficult to adjust. However, if you need it done it is not impossible. The first thing you need to understand is that if you are taking or subtracting from the skirt pattern you also need to add or subtract from the flounce so it matches the skirt pattern. This includes adding the width and shortening or lengthening the skirt. As long as you remember this point you will have a perfect fitting skirt.

How To Cut Your Flounce Wrap Skirt Pattern
To avoid making a mistake, the best thing you can do is to retrace the pieces that are on fold and those that say “cut two”. That is the back of the skirt, and the front and the back flounce. Lay the fabric open, and lay all the pieces on top. This is the way the factories cut the fabrics by the way.
Pay special attention to the grainlines, the fold marks become the grain line.
Below is a diagram of the cutting layout if you are using a single knit. Notice I am using the stretch of the fabric in the horizontal line. The opposite will apply if I am using a woven fabric.
How To Sew Your Flounced Skirt
We will start by sewing the fronts to the back. The turn under seam finish would be the perfect seam to sew this skirt. You can, of course, use an overlocker if you have one.
If you choose to use the turn under seam here is a very easy to follow tutorial on how to make this seam.
Your flounced wrap skirt pattern consists of the center parts and the right and left flounce, so you need to sew this in the right order.
Sewing The Skirt
You will notice in this flounce wrap skirt pattern that I have two darts at the back of my skirt but not on the front. Once you have sewn the skirt back and front together try the skirt on and see how you like the drape of the skirt on you. If you are an hourglass figure chances are you will need to make two darts at the front as well. If you are pregnant or have an apple figure continue sewing as I have done in the tutorial.
Sew the darts in the back, and front of the skirt. If you require assistance on this, we have an excellent tutorial on how to sew darts.
Lay the back of the skirt print side up.
Place one of the sides, aligning it with the edge.
Lay the other side of the front print side down, pin and sew at 5/8″ on both sides.
Sewing The Flounce
The flounce is divided into four parts, there are two backs, one right side, and one left side.
The right flounce and left flounce are different in shape. The right flounce is longer than the left. This is to avoid making the left one bulk under the right.
You will have two backs like the ones below.
Print sides together sew the two backs at 5/8″.
Place the flounce print side up and pin the right flounce.
Pin the left side. Sew at 5/8′.
Pin the flounce to the skirt and sew at 3/8″. You can use an overlocker or zigzag as I have, then sew the seam allowance down.
Sewing The Hem And Adding The Waist Tie
I have chosen to add bias tape to the hem for extra drama, however, you can do a normal 1/4″ hem if you prefer.
To make the waistband, cut a strip of fabric that is 80″X 3 3/8″ “, this measurement is good for sizes 10 and 12 but should be increased for size 14, 16, 18 by at least 2”.
Fold the band wrong sides together and iron. Sew the band at 3/8″ and apply the grommets on the right side of the waistband leaving 1″ in between grommets.

Hi Eleonor, it will be very difficult to match the stripes and will take you more fabric than the one specified in the material list. You will end up with a very bold design. Another alternative would be to use very thin stripes where it will not be too apparent that the stripes do not match.
This is a lovely skirt pattern, thank you for the download . I have read the comments and also the instructions a couple of times to see if I could see it anywhere, but I cannot find if the pattern includes seam allowances, or if we have to add them?

No, you do not need to download the pattern again. This is a normal 8-18 size skirt, download the size you normally use.
Are there measurements. I don’t have a normal size. It depends on the brand and style.
This looks like a really pretty skirt, and I’m attracted to it because my size changes frequently, and I think, once made, this would be adaptable to slight size changes.

Yes I would really like instructions on how to lengthen the skirt; I can easily lengthen the skirt itself, but since the front flounce pieces are almost a complete circle, there doesn’t seem to be room to add length to the front flounce pieces. What would you recommend for this? Add onto the back flounce pieces and extend around onto the front?
Also, it’s unclear how you thread the ties through three eyelets. When I’ve made a wrap skirt before, there was only one opening. The tie from the left side of the skirt wrapped all the way around the waist and came out at an opening on the left side of the waistband, where it would meet the tie from the right overlap, and tie. Is this how yours is designed to wrap? And if so, what are the other two grommets for? Could you post a picture showing how to wrap and tie through the grommets?
Lastly, I’m sorry to hear about Craftsy/Bluprint. Are they trying to faze out independent designers? That is so sad, bc that was one of the great parts about Craftsy. ?
The lengthening of this skirt looks difficult but it is not, however it requires a full tutorial. I have not yet finished writing it.
The grommets are so you can grow or slim the skirt down with your needs. I too change from size 8 to 12 throughout the year. I threaded the tie in one grommet through the center end out the other. This is a simple skirt made attractive by the flounce, but it works just like any other wrap skirt.
Bluprint has become another large company that bought something very lucrative and instead of keeping what worked very well change it into another subscription based company that has lost its way. Only time will tell whether their change pays up for them, as for the designers we are left in the cold and lost all control of our designs.
Does the wrap, wrap far enough so that a sudden gust of wind won’t expose your whole front?

I am a veteran sewist but I cant visualize the waistband quite right. Probably just an “oldtimer’s” moment. LOL. I am at that point and I’d like to see a closeup pic of the front of the skirt that overlaps-the outside where the waistband is attached to the flounce. Is the Flounce sewed into the waistband or left to hang completely by itself? I hope that is not so muddy you can’t understand. Thank you for the pattern and I tried to pay but the “cart” just gave me the download without taking any money. Sorry, but I DID try as several others said.

I am making the flounce skirt and you say that there are darts in the back, but I cannot find them on the pattern? Where should I put them.
That is the adjustment I did for my figure, you may not need them the pattern does not have them, if you are an hourglass it will look better if you make the darts. Fold the back and place the darts 3.4″ from the fold line.
I love the pattern but, could not get the payment section to work. It seems to get the dl, one must get through the payment section. I hope to try again.

I also find that I am never a “standard” size, so having an included measurements chart indicating body measurements as well as finished measurements for each size would greatly assist me to decide on a size & how to adjust your pattern to fit me. I would use size 12. Do check the flounce before you cut it to make sure it fit around the hem of the skirt. I only tested size 10.

I love the look of this pattern. You state sizes 8-18 but there is no size chart to see where I fall. Maybe once I get it put together it will be more obvious.
Also note that when I first chose a dollar amount to pay and hit continue it did not keep my price (it still said zero). I went back and did it again and that time it worked.
Looking forward to making this skirt! I might try it on a cotton first but I pretty much live in knit so that will be next unless I see just the perfect knit in my stash.

I love this skirt, it’s so cute, thanks for posting it. I like the grommets on the waistband, but I would appreciate it if there were more directions on how to do it. I’ve never done one like this before and I just can’t figure out how you did it.
You say to cut the waistband 80″ x 20″. Then, “Fold the band wrong sides together and iron. Sew the band at 3/8″ and apply the grommets on the right side of the waistband leaving 1″ in between grommets.” Those are the only directions for the waistband.
If I fold it in half, then it’s 10″ wide. That’s a really wide waistband and it doesn’t look that wide on the pictures. Also, if it’s 80″ long, that’s way longer than my waist measurement so there will be a lot of extra fabric at the ends. You also don’t have us turn the fabric right sides together before adding the grommets. You talk about tying the waist closed but I’m really confused on how to do this. Could you please add more directions on how to add the waistband and how it’s supposed to tie closed? Also, a few more measurements on exactly where the gromets are supposed to be put in and exactly where to attach it to the skirt would be great too.

You caught a typo, the waistband is 80″ X 3 3/8″. I don’t know what your waist size, so you need to work out how long it needs to be, for one side to go around the waist and the other side long enough to you can make a bow. How to sew the waistband is something that an intermediate seamstress could do. I have shared another skirt with the same waistband that you can read and learn to do this type of skirt. Otherwise, you need to wait for me to make the step by step instructions on these type of waistband. I will send you and email when I publish the post.
I’m confused about the grommets too. I get the waistband and can adjust it to size right and can look up the best way to install grommets, but there are no directions on where to put the grommets at all. Are they centered in the back? on the side? It doesn’t look like it would be the front from the picture. I’m just confused. Other wrap skirts I’ve worn have had a slit for the waist band to go through when wrapping around. Is that what the grommets are for? Or are they more visually interesting?
They are place on the side. I used grommets because I like to do things out of the box. If you don’t want them use a slit. There is alink on the article on how to place the grommets. Please read that and practice on a scrap of fabric before you attempt to place the grommets on the waistband.

I have been wanting a wrapped skirt for awhile now and I fell in love with this pattern. Where would I find the other skirt you shared that has this type of waistband and what is it’s name? please how much fabric for the flounce wrap skirt?
3 yards or more depending on the size and width of fabric. The best thing to do is to print the size you are after and lay it on the fabric you are going to use or similar and then purchase the required amount.
Does it say somewhere how much fabric is required and I missed it? It’s hard to judge from just the pattern. I’m looking at size 12. FYI, payhip told me when I downloaded the file on my phone that it would not work on mobile devices and that I’d get an error message (which was true) and that I should download it on a computer. It worked fine on my laptop.

This is a beautiful skirt, and I love the way it camouflages things that I want camouflaged! But I would need to seriously grade it up—like to a size 26 at least. I have a little experience with pattern grading, so if you could tell me where to increase I could probably manage it. I certainly wouldn’t expect you to go to all that trouble just for one person! Even if you can’t help me with this, it’s fine, because all your patterns are wonderful and you are so generous to make them available here!!!!

Very cute skirt.. I think it would be helpful to give the finished length of the skirt rather than saying if you’re petite it hits mid-calf and if tall just below the knee. That’s a rather arbitrary description.
I like your patterns and think it’s very generous of you to offer them for free. I know, from drafting some of my own patterns, that it takes much more time than a lot of people realize.

Hi Cheryl, what seems to be happening? Most readers seem to be downloading just fine. The Payhip button should be on the page. It will only ask for your email and the just download the pattern. There’s no account to create or anything.
Same for me. Downloads but says cannot open. I open other pdf downloads with no problems.
I was also able to “download” it on my phone, but when trying to open it, the file just vanishes. Not in the usual files folder, either, where all my other downloads are.
It does say there may be problems when downloading with a mobile device.
