Finishing your skirt

There is very little still left to do. It will only take us a few minutes.

  • Try on the skirt and take a look at the lining. You want your lining hemmed up neatly out of the way so that it won't show below the outer hemline when you wear the skirt.
  • Mark with a pin how much you need to take up. Use your handy sliding seam gauge to mark up 1/4 inch all the way round, turn and press.
  • Then turn up again to your marked hemline.  Pin in place.
  • Sew with a regular straight stitch.

  • Now press your lining hemline.
  • Look over the rest of the skirt, snip any loose threads and give it a final press.
  • Now model your skirt for the admiring world to see and take some pictures to send me!

How did your skirt come out? I'm delighted with mine, even though I already have two the same, by making it in a different fabric, it feels like a totally different skirt, yet still with a great fit.

Hello. Thank you for the detailed tutorial. I have been thinking ko g about making a skirt for so long. Time to stop procrastinating! I’m going to try to make a skort for golf. I’ll add the ready-made shorts inside (which I took from an old skort). I’ll use this instead of the lining. The problem will be the mix of stretch and non-stretch fabrics.
Fingers crossed!

This is a great tutorial, I’ve only been sewing a few weeks but I’m going to give this a go! The zipper tutorial link doesn’t work anymore, it goes to a sewing course costing lots. But I can find another invisible zipper foot tutorial so that’s fine. Thank you for all the work you’ve put into this, I really appreciate your work!

Hi Deb,

Thanks for the tutorial. I found it yesterday and have read through it all this evening. I am fairly new to sewing and just love reading your blog. I am originally from England and now live in Australia and am also of the generation that uses inches and cm. I am quite happy to sew in cm but buying ready to wear for hubby in cm messes with my head. I am looking forward to making the skirt, I think it would look great in suiting fabric for my winter corporate wardrobe.

Hi Deby, I just got this tutorial tonight and didn’t see where you did a step by step for the waist band. Did I miss something or is it out yet? This is so easy. I will be going out to Jo Anns tomorrow for material and zipper. LOVE THIS!!! Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to help those who are learning to sew. We can now do this with confidence. May God Bless You and Yours.

I recently found your site and the skirt directions. I made the pattern and the skirt — IT FITS! On my next skirt I will not be so freaked out by the invisible zipper and I will leave a bit of space at the waistline for a hook and eye or some other closure. Thank you so much for this information, I love my skirt. Roxie in KS
